I have a 1985 pickup that is really hard to start and when u get it started you can hold it to the floor and it just chugs. I believe its a vacuum leak somewhere but where? also it had the origional carb on it, its a 302 by the way, and it was soaked with gas so i put on a different motorcraft carb that came off a 302 out of a 78 mercury couger. Also i looked at the egr gasket and it was soaked in gas and had a lot of carbon built up on it. What vacuum lines can i eliminate also becasue i live in iowa and i dont need all the smog stuff on it
First thing to do is pull the aircleaner off, and get it running again. If you possibly can, look at the top of the carb while it's trying to run, and see if the choke door is totally shut. If it is, then reach up and pull it open a little bit and see if that helps.
If the choke was opening , then are you sure the carb you have now is not pouring too much fuel into the engine? Pull a sparkplug and see if it's wet and stinks like fuel. Sounds like the previous carb was doing the same thing with all the gas all over the place. Two carbs doing this tells me you might have dirt and rust in the fuel system, causing the fuel needle inside the carb to get stuck open.
With the carb you have now, if you get it running (chugging) turn it off and run around and pull the air cleaner off and look down the throat of the carb with a flashlight. If you see liquid fuel dripping down into the engine, then you do have a flooding problem, and you probably need to take the top of the carb off and clean the float needle assembly out. Make sure you have a good fuel filter going to the carb to keep the dirt and rust flakes out of the carb.

the second carb isnt soaked in gas tho only the first one was. It runs the same with both carbs. Its also a manual choke, it was like that when i bought it i just assumed that someone did it because it didnt work or something. Is there any vacuum line that could make it run bad tho? Sorry im not a great mechanic so thanks for your help
