Hi, I finally got xp restored from IBM factory discs but now I've got problems downloading software.I have an IBM 3GHZ thinkcenter. The new install loaded Symantec AV suite. I seem to be unable to download any exe. files. (I also have ad-aware,spybotS&D and the commodo pro firewall) I'm not sure what happened but since my last windows update I've lost some functions. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks
Goto system restore and then restore your computer right before it did the Windows updates that should clear up all the problems you are having , hope that helps

Do you mean Internet security suite or just Antivirus??
Try disabling the norton product to see if that is blocking it..
You may have answered no and norton is blocking the downloads..
First off, you need to disable, then uninstall Symantec AV--it's basically a virus itself. It may seek out and remove other viruses, but it becomes such a system resource hog and strangles your ability to do many things that it is like a virus.
For good virus protection, download and install the latest free version of AVG from Grisoft.
Once you've done all that, it should be easy to download and install any updates.

This statement is totally false and should not be regarded..
Norton does use more resources ,but that is because it does more..
AVG Free is not a full program it is the lite version.. Although it is better than nothing you get what you pay for.
If he has a full version why would it be better to got to a lite version..

I agree. There are instructions on the net for completely removing Norton products; it is quite a detailed process because of the way Norton grabs the computer by the bootstraps and holds on for dear life... removing it is very much like removing a nasty virus. I highly recommend removing all Norton Products and installing AVG.

This statement is totally false and should not be regarded. Two can play at that game. I said what I said because by my own experience and most people I know who are quite computer savvy (or do IT for a living), Norton or Symantec AV programs are junk--they basically take over your computer and don't let you do squat just to keep out some potential viruses. Kind of like, "My truck never breaks down because I never drive it anywhere." AVG Free is an excellent program because it is underwritten by businesses paying Grisoft for the full version. Those businesses have an interest in the general population keeping their computers virus-free--so that those individually-owned computers don't spread viruses to the businesses, who stand to lose a LOT of money should a virus infect their systems.
Although I do agree that symantic is a pig that is what IBM gave me for 90 days. When I phoned Lenovo it was pointed out to me that I had AVG updated and running when this virus ate it for lunch!!! I used 2 additional av programs to try to clean it out but it even ate my hidden XP install. They basically told me I'm stuck with symantic for 90 days and then I can go back to AVG. I'm wondering if spybot or commodo could be causing this as only exe. files and torrents (so far) won't download and I get no AV warnings they just won't appear on my desktop. I have been told in the past that both Norton and Mcphee don't play well with others.
Aside from the downloading issues this re-install to updated factory specs. is amazing! I really will be telling people about Lenovo products now.I had no idea about this comp. as I bought it used (with a factory warranty, thank god!)

Randy you've already have gotten alot of help that might have you thinking and concidering. You should beable to go into the control panel/add-remove programs and remove your last update. Although I dont expect the update is causeing the trouble. Go into secrety and see how it is configured. Your fiewall can also be causing the trouble. I dont know about commando. If your have problems dling its logicual that the firewall is stopping, after all that what it is there for if its configured that way.
I agree norton can be a pita, but its not junk. Yep its a system hog no doubt about it. Its not that hard to get rid of it. Boot into safe mode, go control panel and remove the program. Then go to search and do 2 searches 1 for norton and the other for symantec. Delete all the folders found. Now you need to delete reg. keys. Please learn to make a backup. The easiest way I know how is to log into reg. thru run with regedit command at the tree go to regestery on the top left conor and select export you'll be giveing a browse window you can select where you want to export your backup. I always export to desktop. With this out the way press Ctrl-F at the same time and type in symantec then select find next. It will find the next symantec key for you. Keep doing it untell you get finished searching reg. message then do it again for norton just in cause.
If you have problems booting or working in safe mode or if windows still starts norton in safe mode on your box{which it should'nt} then on normal boot go to run and type msconfig and under start unselect all norton processes then reboot then you should beable to remove it like I said before. Why symantec is hard to get rid of is cause it is defaulted to run at start so when you go to remove it only the files that arent being used is being deleted. You might even get an access denied message. Think about it if it was just so simple then you could write a script that would just uninstall your AV then on the next boot it would run virus's exe.
llingThanks exile!! I'm bookmarking this page so that I can unload symantic in 87 days( and counting) I've resolved to just use my new2me laptop that will be delivered in 2 days to download anything that this one won't allow. Thanks for the excellent tutorial,I only found this exe. issue because I was getting a registry backup program.
Million, sorry for the wait. My ISP is from medicine hat (Shockware.com) they have been far less than helpful probably because my virus was causing all sorts of grief for them as I was hogging all of their bandwidth not even knowing it (wireless) they were probably happy for me to be offline for awhile

Reason: wrong spe
PS. , I may also install Mepis on this machine as it's the program that saved my bacon and allowed me to get my system repaired enough to run the factory disks.
