Intermittent Cruise Control

02 F350 6 speed stock. Cruise does not always work. After turning a corner it will sometimes start working again. This morning I noticed if I hold the ON button and press the COAST button the horn will sound.

I'm guessing I've got a short inside the steering column. If I can't find it from below how hard is it to remove the air bag module. It looks like special tools are required. Does anyone know if these tools are available at the local auto store? How do you remove the cover over the horn/air bag? Will your horn sound if you hold the on & coast button at the same time? Any one have ideas about someplace else to check before looking in the steering column?

Thanks.

i would think if it was a short it would be in the column it self..not behind the horn..also keep in mind there was a recal on the CC a little while ago...

I forgot about the recall. I looked it up here and it says it's only for gasoline/natural gas powered engines. I thought I was going to get lucky there for a minute.

My guess is the slider switch (clock spring) as most call it has failed. This is basically a ribbon connector as on a printer head. It is located under the air bag in the steering column. You have to remove the airbag/and steering wheel to get at it. You must install it corretly so that you have even travel from center to left and right otherwise you will break the new one. Cost isn't that $$ if you do the installation. Use caution and follow correct procedures on the air bag to prevent deployment. Best of luck

Here is the link to the faulty CC switch. This might not be the cause of your problem but for less than $20 it is worth getting it changed.

Thanks for the link on the switch. I'll probably go ahead and do this, but won't hold my breath. Making the horn beep with the cruise buttons has me thinking it's a short. I'm hoping it's down in he column and not in the wheel, otherwise it may be the clock spring. I'm just hoping I don't have to play with that airbag. Anyone know about the "special" tools required to remove the airbag?
Diagnostic Tool, Restraint System (2 Req'd)

All of these issues are in the steering wheel and all of the power goes through the Slide/clockspring ribbon connector. It typically fails at the clamp connector on one end. This has a sharp corner where the ribbon connector is pulled tight across the sharp corner when you turn the wheel to one extreme. This is where the connector fails. You still might have a short but this is where I would look given your problem. I have actually looked at this part under the "glass" to see the defect that causes the failure.

I don't deny you could have other problems but this is where I would go.

I figure the CC switch was not likely the problem, but since the subject came up - might as well change out the faulty designed switch that has caused other models to burn. But ours will not burn up parked in the garage or outside - only while driving...

I finally found the cruise control part in my service manual. It was under "S" for speed control (why can't they just call it what it is). It tells how to diagnose it, but requires a scan tool for the diesel engine. The gas motors have a self test. I discovered I can still sound the horn with my cruise buttons even with the key in my pocket so now my questions are:

Is there any chance this clock spring short might cause the air bag to deploy between now and the time I get it fixed?

How worried should I be about removing the air bag to fix this? I don't want that stupid thing blowing up.

Your in Texas, but not sure how close to Lawton, OK (40 minutes N of Wichita Falls) you are. But if you are close I have the AE scantool software. You are more than welcome to stop by.

Don't think so.. I would like to think they have better safety controls than that. But don't really know which wire in the harnness is for the airbag and how close it is to the airbag fire line.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm a couple of hours away from Wichita Falls, plus ya'll had some ice/snow up there last yesterday I believe.

I'm going to poke around under the steering column and hope I find a chaffed wire somewhere so I don't have to pull the steering wheel. If that doesn't work I guess I know what my plans will be for this weekend.

Looks like I never followed up with this thread. It ended up being the CPP (clutch pedal position) switch. The inside of the switch is supposed to have one long spring on each side of the shaft, not the broken mess that looks like several springs stacked on top of each other pictured here.

Anyway, time for another update. At 337,255 miles today, my cruise wouldn't come on again. Pushed the clutch in and let it out while cruising down the freeway and the cruise worked after that. I'll be putting a new CPP in again soon. I got the last one from Autozoo. Current pricing shows to be $40 with a limited lifetime warranty. I wonder if they'll give me a new one for free?

Stay tuned.

Maybe they will warranty it.
