I've got a little bit saved up since the Big Oil hit my wallet, and now i can't help but spend it on the truck. Here's where i stand... I have a group of three things i want to do to my truck, but i am torn between which one.
1. conversion to 2007 front end. I already have the lights, so i'd need new header panel, new bumper, (chrome bottom-painted to match trim on top), with a grille painted to match the truck, with chrome billet inserts in the grille. Got a quote from powerstrokeshop for about $930 plus $100 shipping for all the stuff. Not including the $120 billet inserts, plus the painting cost for the stuff at a local shop. All in all its around 1300
2. Brakes. My truck stops average id say, new rotors and pads on the front (stock) in April 07 so they aren't that bad off. But sometimes it pulls to alternating sides when wet, no pattern. Something i can live with, but the 35's have really slowed my braking distance. Its also something i'd really only notice, being the only driver. Don't pull a trailer or anything. Total cost with new rotors, pads, calipers and a powersteering pump is around $1200.
3. Stage one 160cc AC's. Yes, the injector bug has bitten me. Now i can fully support them, that little extra 50hp is calling me. I'm thinking that with the injectors, it could possibly curb my desire to dump tens of thousands in engine work with not too much to show for it except a badass truck. The more i think about it, the more i should be saving for a house or something important. Now all signs are pointing to the injectors, however the rods are the only thing keeping me from already having pulled the "add to cart" trigger. Now they say you are pushing it with injectors, but i honestly think i dont push my truck enough to worry about it. If i drove like a fire truck driver, or drove like JTharvey for that matter (scary!), i could understand pushing the limits when you are either 0% or 100% throttle. Plus, ive got the cackling AE im debating on spending $150 to replace for virtually nothing. Or, spend $500 more and get a cooler sounding truck IMO, better mileage, no cackle, and a touch more power. Im leaning towards the remanned $650 ones from DPPpower.com. So, those of you with big oil and ACs, do you worry about pushing the limits (i know there is at least TwelveAlpha out there) and possibly blowing the engine? The last thing i want to do is blow the engine. But, i do think knowing im riding the edge would actually make me less desired to be hard on the truck.
Ha Ha ha. I say do the front end or brakes. Don't want to window that block. Are you planning on going on the rollers at Smokin? I may have to install a bigger sink strainer. You know how I feel about stuff that doesn't make it go faster.
Kris,
I would go with the injectors! Then again, I am a fire truck driver. That will also give you the permagrin. Then again the air horn and Q help with that.
Scott
I would say hold off on injectors. . . because I'm not quite ready to put b codes in mine yet. Although nothing is going on witht he truck so much now since its winter time. But thats my vote
Tim
Im certainly not going to buy big stage 2's with these rods. If its going to be any injector with my stock engine, it's 160cc singles. May have to toss your idea out in favor of something else.
Kris, are you saying I'm a bad driver? In simple terms of safety, the brakes are the way to go, especially if they're in need of replacement now. If your stock brakes still have some life left in them, go for the injectors and save up for the brakes later.
Tim, If i am pulling the engine, i'd have to say i'd just do it all while im in there and save the hassle down the road. And if i do go big, large B codes would be in my future, like you. But if im keeping the engine the way it is now, i might be looking at possibly head studs, and that's it. I can make 35psi on stock injectors, so im wondering what the 160s would do.
No Jeremy you are not a BAD driver, however you would be a DANGEROUS driver if your truck had PMR's and injectors. Consider yourself lucky! My brakes do still work like a normal truck (all our others), however when i was thinking about upgrading, i was just looking for that extra bit in performance. So it looks like ive made up my mind.. Hmm. Damn core charge.
Here is the link for the Q. I would go with the Fed Sig. They are the best. If I remember right it was about a $1000 addition to the truck. It sure does make people move out of the way!
PS - Join the fire dept first bc the ticket for unlawful use is like $990 here in WI.
