I feel your pain. I have decided to drive the damn thing and the MPG's will be what they are. Buyer beware if you plan on a Ford, cannot speak about the other manufacturers. Ford has dropped the ball on this one and apparently has the opinion I have, just drive it and stop complaining because we are not going to make it better.
So Ford has dropped the ball eh. Don't you think Ford would like to build a heavy duty diesel pickup that gets 20+ MPG. Of course they would. They had to design the 2008 with the EPA holding a gun to their head,as did the other two american truck builders. The EPA has decided that our itsy bitsy diesels are a menace to the world. How much pollution does a 747 produce on a cross country flight. Now multiply that by the planes that fly worldwide spewing jet exhaust at 40,000ft. I think it's time for the Govt. to wake up and smell the coffee.
I am convinced more than ever that 90 plus percent of the bad mileage and regen issues are a result of too many sources of diesel fuel out there and too many folks handling it, such that even if everyone is ligit trying to be correct about supplying and using the correct fuel, at least 5% of us are going to end up with a tank of the wrong stuff in our truck. Now factor in that some owners will intentionally try to save a buck, or have to use the dirty fuel in a pinch, or make a mistake and grab the wrong nozzle, etc. Then factor in all the distribution mistakes and intentional mistakes that can occur at all levels to sell dirty fuel as Ultra Low, and you are going to have a ton of trucks with issues, through no fault of Ford or EPA. I am not saying I agree with what EPA has done, but I do believe the approach is reasonable if we can get rid of the real world human issues versus perceived technical issues. Also keep in mind that less than 1% of F350 diesel owners are on this thread. And of that one percent or less I would bet 80% of them are on the list due to issues. Very few people go on these lists when they are not having problems. They go on for input before buying and when they have problems. And probably .001% of F350 owners are on here because we have no other life and like to discuss this stuff.

Okay, now subract every the pollution from every car, train, or whatever those people on the plane would be creating, if they drove there instead.
I have 7,000 miles and I am getting around 16.5 mpg all around. I actually get better mileage if I stay off the highway and keep the truck around 55mph. Stay very easy on the throttle and keep the boost down. I only get this mileage if I use Irving ulsd 15ppm or Exxon ulsd 15ppm any other fuel and the best I can get is 13-14mpg. I also have found using the additives (made for ulsd) actually brought my mileage down and actually made for a very violent regen. My truck is a build 2 CC 3.73 auto with 18" wheels FX4. My 2003 6.0L gets about 15.5 since the ulsd. When I first bought the truck running regular fuel in the winter mixed with K1 I was getting 18. How can the environment be better off when I'm burning so much more?
I think all the new diesels are not getting the miles per gallon due to emmissions. Like it or not we have to live with it. I am a die hard Ford guy. Thats all I will ever drive. Like it or not Ford has the best HD truck by far. its really not even close. Chevy an Dodge are not an option for me. I sure hate these high fuel prices. were saving the enviroment but burning much more fuel.Cant figure that one out.

My EPA Dmax gets the same mpg's as my 6.0 diesel Excursion! I get 16 in town and 18-20 in the highway, I have 15k on the Dmax...... All the people I have talked to are getting the same so I am happy! I have yet to be penalized by the EPA as far as mpgs!!
Were burning cleaner fuel, but using approx a 1/4 of a tank more fuel to go the same mileage as we used to. Which puts a "strain" on the production capabilities, which means the oil companies can charge more per gallon, but evidently that's OK . Why don't we just open our oil fields and start refining more of our own. Either I'm stupid or I just don't get the picture !!
