O.K. most everyone knows that I am one of the beta testers (read: Guinea Pig) for DFA's (Dino Fuel Alternatives) new Fass fuel replacement system. Well it has been installed and I have been running it since Monday afternoon. A special thanks goes out to fellow member Rampage_F350 (Chris) for his help, and the use of his truck on Monday for parts runs.
Since I already had installed the cackle cure kit(cross connect kit) previously, i was thinking this was going to be a walk in the park. It was, to an extent. Big hands and little fittings don't mix sometimes (there is still a 9/16 deep well socket that is somewhere between the rear pax head and the downpipe, after 600 miles driving sine=ce monday it has not fallen out, that I know of)
O.K. the jist of the kit is as follows
5/8 fuel supply line from a 95GPH FASS pump and filter assembly that feeds the pax rear head and the drivers front head(stock feed locations). A Cross Connect kit (previously installed) that alleviates the dead end fuel rails and provides a regulated return by the use of a small orifice in the line. the CCK is istalled in the rear fuel port of the drivers head and the front fuel port of the pax head (these ports are capped from the factory with 1/8"NPT plugs thus making the stock fuel rail a dead end system.)
So, if you are with me so far we are feeding the rear of the pax side and draining the front of the pax side, and feeding the front of the drvr side and drainging the rear of the drivers side.
If I had not already installed the CC kit I probably would have feed the front of both heads and drained the rear of both heads, but I didn't feel like the extra work of replumbing that would provide any additional benefits.
The stock fuel bowl has been removed, as well as the stock SS fuel line, and the stock pump.
The FASS pump was mounted on the frame rail, new feed line run to the engine, and here is where I deviated from the original kit, DFA provides a 12" line with a vibralock fitting that will connect to your cut feed line from the tank. I was also doing my in-tank mods the same day so I decided that I would run a 6 foot line all the way back to the tank, and get rid of the quick disconnect fittings back there. I cut the fittings that DFA provided out of the Push to lock hose and went to my local Parker store and got 6 more feet of the Fire Resistant line and made my connections.
This is a quality kit that Jason has put a good bit of thought into. The bracket for the pump/filter assembly is very nicely fabricated. The FASS pump is a little louder than the stock pump, but certainly not bothersome by any stretch. I did add some thick rubber grommets between the pump and the frame bolts for dampening.
O.K. here are the performance results.
fuel pressure
Stock pump, DP tuner 80E 72psi idle, WOT 40PSI. with a .065 shim in the FPR.
DPT 120R 72psi idle, WOT 30PSI. same shim
Some pics. I relocated my under hood fuel pressure guage, to an "Old School" style mount. I have since refined this mount and had a quality hose made to make this permanent. will post up some pics tomorrow of under hood, and the final fuel pressure guage mounting.
Nice. How is the s.o.p. dyno? Is there any info on approx. pricing?
SOP is definatley better, tires now roast without powerbraking, dont have a dyno around so ill have to wait till Smokin' in the Smokies. I am not sure that Jason has set a retail price as of yet.
With my stock pump and a regulated return system, fuel system all the way from the tank, i can hold and maintain any pressure i want. I run it at 60, and even at WOT the gauge wouldnt budge to 59. Its that responsive. And, i have it boost referenced, so now it occasionally see 90psi. Im guessing the thing you installed doesnt have an actual regulator? 80psi at idle is a bit excessive, and you may want to lower that to increase pump life if you are worried about that.
ahh, I see. Is Fuel pressure easily adjustable compared to shimming?
Yes, actually easier, in the second pic in post #4 youll see a some brass fittings, at the end of that brass TEE is an orifice, the one that is in there happens to hold pressure at 80PSI idle, I can go to a larger one(which will hold less pressure) but I am happy were it is now. From what I have been reading these FASS pumps are designed to carry up to 100PSI at 100% duty cycle.
Oh by the way, with the combination of the fuel kit and the intank mods my engine is very smooth and quiet now.
Is that mounted to your windshield wiper, then how do you.....? ummm ok
Just kidding. I wonder how it would work on my 522k plus miler with biodiesel?
Nope, not mounted on wiper arm, but rather the black plastic valance(cover, fairing, what ever you ant to call it ). wipers work fine, clear with no problems, just have to turn them on and flip the arm up quickly if I need to change the blades.
the kit is rated for bio-diesel, according to DFA.
I put a FASS system on my Dodge when the lift pump got weak. Had pump and two filters. Great product. How is the one you installed different from their run of the mill fuel pumps other than higher pressure?
