dual tank problems. i need to know if there are electric pumps in the tanks. is there a solenoid or valve somewhere that controls the dual tanks. Thank You
No electric pumps on your model. There is a valve mounted on the frame. I haven't looked at my 89 yet, but the gas switching valves were on the driver's side frame rail.
well the truck is a beater f-450 rollback. Guy i bought it from said he ran out of fuel with it then couldn't get it started again. I drove down there 450 miles and 450 back home. My new pup died while i was down there. the trailer i brang was too small 20 foot truck was 27 foot. thought it would fit because wheels were only 18 feet but trailer had dovetail would have hit the ground.
Anyway i'm going back in the spring to try to get her running. Batteries were dead and it was real cold outside and with the bad news i wanted to get home. I'm just trying to cover all the bases for when i return. Dude said he ran it out of fuel and couldn't get it started again. said he messed with the dual tank switch but thinks it clogged or something. doesn't seem like he knows anything about mechanical stuff. If does have something to do with the dual tank set up i want to bypass it to one tank just to get it running and back home or somewhere out of there. So far i'm thinking it could be the fuel solenoid power, fuel solenoid, fuel pump, clogged fuel valve, injector pump, slow cranking battery. I really won't know until i get back down there but i'm trying to get together all the parts i may need. Can the fuel solenoid be replaced without taking pump all apart?, can the metering valve be checked without getting into it to deep?
No pump in the tank(s)...Manual lift pump on the engine lower right front corner... unless there has been an electrical pump istalled on the frame rail after the FSV by PO.
Fuel selector valve on the frame rail by driver... you could bypass it by making up a couple lines with the right ends are the fuel tanks different than normal frame and under box OEM.
Air in the system must be bleed from the fuel system and replaced with fuel while cranking engine or by some means ie electric pump, outboard motor fuel line squeeze bulb, vacuum pump whatever.
On the 7.3 if you hook up a suction devise at the fuel return connector on the top of the IP it should suck fuel into and past the IP.
You will need 2 excellent batteries and a good fast starter for any start attempt.
You might want to check the fuses. My brothers 89 died, replaced the lift pump, still no go. Got to looking and the fuel gauage would not move when the tank selector switch was changed. Turned out to be the fuse was blowen. Some times you don't think of the easy fixes. Tom
if it's a mechanical pump why would a fuse stop it from working? wouldn't it pull from one of the tanks? That's why if all else fail i want to bypass the tank selector swtich and valve and get the sucker running.
Thatr sucks. i was hoping i could bypass it with some metal tubing and rubber house. Anyway i called a few towing places and so far the best price i got was $300 to tow it 45 miles away to my friends place. Just want to get it out of there my bud is half *** street mechanic so maybe he'll get it going before i get chance to. The dude i bought it from swiped a injector line #6 off it before i bought it. Anyone out there have any lines? And maybe a filler neck. One has rusted away. Errr anyone out there in NJ that does towing?? he he
thanks
