I believe it will, I believe all rangers started using the mazda M5OD tranny after 89. I'm pretty sure this is correct, but could someone confirm, how about you Smitty.
I swaped tranny in my aerostar. I have 3.0 aero. Ok. Some tips.
1. Be sure tranny has bellhousing for 2.3. M5OD is widly used for different cars and trucks (Explorer, Mazda 929, Mazda E200-2200/3000, Mazda B200-2200/3000, Aerostars, rangers and many other vehicles for different markets) On base of M5OD 5st trannies for Ford Scorpio, Sierra, Transit were made. I belive you know that bolt patterns of different engines differ too, so ask a gue, who offer tranny what engine was this tranny with.
2. Bue flywheel, pressure plate with tranny.
3. Use new clutch MC, SC, hose, clutch release bearing and disk. Do not install used parts. No reason to drop tranny one more time.
4. I considered before, that ranger clutch pedal fits aero, but this is not true. Look for Ranger clutch pedal.
5. Be carefull with clucth line. Really easy to brake. Be carefull with nuts....
6. 89-98 codes may appeare if you have ECU for trcuk A4LD. Ignore them.
7. C/C may work to agressively. This problem may be solved with ECU and cruise controll reinstalled from truck with 5st tranny only.
8. Just installed clutch may shake a bit for 1-2 weeks. Later this effect dissapeares.
9. Sometimes trannies have different lenth and may be you will look for a bit longer propeller shaft on junkyards.
10. I dont know why, but after tranny swap I got vibrations at 85-100 mph on 4th gear and neutral gear. No vibrations on all other gears. I tried to ballance shaft to zero, but no result. Had to replace it with dual drive shaft.
P/S. To find a bellhousing for any motor is not a problem too.... I usually check will bellhousing fit engine with made of alluminium plate installing between tranny and engine....
If the '01 is a 2.5l, it should be almost identical. The 2.3l DOHC Duratec, which I think was available in '01, won't work AFAIK, although I've never actually heard that for sure, they're just from 2 different engine families. No other engine will work either, the 3.0l/4.0l are different as well. 2.5l should work fine though, hope this helps you.
EDIT: BTW, you'll find that the Mazda transmission in your truck doesn't have a seperate bellhousing, if it did this would all be much easier!
