My truck in the last couple of months has starting burning more oil. It is an 01, Auto and it burns a quart about every 500 miles and blows blue smoke at start up for about 5 minutes until it warms up and then it doesn't have any visible smoke. The truck has 190,000 miles. Any idea's. Do I need a new motor??
I'd take a look at the air filter first off, an air filter on a turbo equiped motor that is starting to plug up will cause the turbo to pull oil through the seals and into the intake, you'll burn oil and never even know it.
Also take a look at your turbo exhaust piping. Bad seals on the turbo wil put oil out the exhaust and indicate time for a new turbo.
i don't know the history of your engine. . . but it could be like mine where the first 66K put on her weren't so nice. Oil changes are amazing for an engine. Here is what I would do. First off pull a sample of your oil after a thousand miles or more. . . and send it to blackstone labratories. They will tell you what is wearing in your engine if thats whats causing you to burn oil. If you are passing oil through the rings. . . that doesn't necesarily mean you need to rebuild. And engine can last a lot longer even with those symptoms. Put a dual remote oil bypass kit on there. . . like the one from Amsoil 255 when i purchased mine. That will help keep wearing metal from being circulated back in the lubrication system and wearing the engine faster. Keep up on the oil changes and keep sending samples and you will know how you are doing. its very important to continue to send samples. You will know 70% more about your engine based off of multiple samples. You are looking for trends. Hope this helps. Sorry for the length.
