1997 Ford F-350 Diesel Smokes heavy on start up!

I have a 1997 Ford F-350 powerstroke diesel. It has 83,000 miles. When i start it it smokes a blueish smoke that stinks and burns your eyes. It does it in warm and cold weather. After a minute of driving it does not smoke at all. The truck does not burn oil. It has been to 3 different diesel mechanics and there are no codes.

New Parts:
-Glow plugs
-glow plug relay
-injector o-rings
-cam sensor
-new fuel filter
-exhaust back pressure valve

Have any suggestions ???????

Thank you

Wow it's hard to say with all the new parts. How thick is the smoke? my truck smoke a little at start up but it's mostly white, which I concluded through this excellent forum is normal for these trucks at cold temps and first start ups. I also have an exhaust system which excludes the cat and the fumes are pretty harsh to many but I love em'!

Wink 1997 Ford F-350 diesel exhaust pressure valve

My 1997 Ford F-350 Powerstroke diesel with 83,000 miles. On cold days it will drop in rpm's when in park or neutral it will go from 1,500 rpm - 1,100 rpm and stay there for around 5 seconds and if you give it gas the idle will jump right back up with no problem. Then it will repeat this process again. When driving you will feel the rpm's drop by about 200rpm. Once you drive the truck and shut it off the problem goes away untill the truck sits and gets cold. Cant find any computer codes.

New parts

Exhaust back pressure valve
Fuel filter
Glow Plugs
Glow plug relay
Cam sensor
Injector o-rings

Any suggestions? Thank you!

The smoke is thick when first started and gradually calms down. Smells terrible and stinks up the garage.

What are the temps in your area? Sounds like the exhaust bypass valve operating causing the idle differentials. Does your exhaust make a hissing and groaning noise? Which is completely normal. It's not uncommon for the glow plug relay to be shot already, or gettin' one that's bad.

When the temperature is about 35 or less it does it, and it will make a hissing noise.
There are no codes that the glow plug relay is bad. Is there any way i can test it myself?

Thank you

The hissing is normal and so are the goofy RPM's.It's the EBPV. As for checkin the GPR do a search on this site and you will find a ton of info on checkin your glow plug relay good luck!

Been there, done that. None of those things fixed my problem until I started checking the "less likely" things. I finally looked at the wiring harness that connects to the valve cover gasket, and found that I had two pins that were deformed, and weren't making contact with the pins in the valve cover gasket that connect to the glow plugs. For that reason, though everything else checked out fine, those two glow plugs weren't getting any power, so the truck would start, but those two cylinders would have to warm up enough to fire efficiently, which took time. Meanwhile, the smoke would kill every mosquito in a three county area. I replaced those two bad pins, and now my truck doesn't smoke as much as I do.
If this turns out to be your problem, I can dig up part numbers for you.
Good luck.

smokers anonymous

I have had the same problem with my F-350, The one thing that helps with the problem is a good block heater and an extension cord. I have to keep my truck plugged in year around. I will how ever check into some of the comments that I have seen posted.

How far does your volt gauge pull down when you turn the key on? It should pull almost all the way to the left and after starting gradually work its way to the middle if the gpr and system is working right

mine does the smoke too. i was just about to post a new thread about it. it only does it when its cold out, and looses no more than a 1-1.5 quarts MAX in 5,000 miles. i'm thinking its my fuel heater in the bottom of the filter houseing, cause mines broke for sure.can that cause it?

Have your batteries checked. It takes a lot of juice to light the glow plugs.
