The passenger side rear signal is giving me problems on my '98 Expedition. When I use the right turn signal, the front flashes twice as fast as normal, but the rear doesn't work at all. The strange thing is that by accident, I found out that it works fine if I move the steering wheel up three or four clicks from the full down position, but I usually drive with the wheel tilted all the way down. The left turn signal is not effected. I was going to start by changing the bulb, but I'm thinking that the problem is in the steering column or maybe the flasher block itself.
When you move your steering wheel up three or four clicks does your rear RH tail lights work?
You might have a bad turn signal switch or a short in your steering column causeing your problem.
Now the left signal functions are erratic depending on the position of the steering column. I think that I do have a short of some type. Well, into the dealer we go...but after the holidays!
I found a problem with the connector inside the column not making good connection on my '97. Pull the upper and lower column sections appart; I believe 4 screws, and check the connectors there. You may find what I found and have to reseat, and possibly finding a way to make sure the connectors stay put.
The 98 had a recall for the multi-function switch. Check if your switch has been repalced.
That Owner Notification Program 1) only applied to the washer function and 2) ended in 2000.
Do inspect the harnesses in the column. The tilt position puts stain on several connections making them open intermittently. Reseating the connections often "fixes" them.
This is not a "short circuit" circumstance.

Is it possible to buy just the gray plug for the switch? Both clips were already broken off and I broke some of the little plastic pieces in the plug holes...now they are very loose and aren't making a connection.
I found another way to fix my problem. I went out and bought a 65K mile '99 Navigator the 16th of last month! I located it kind of by accident the weekend before just browsing cars.com. I've been wanting one since they hit the market in '98!
to see some photos of my new ride. When I joined that site, I owned a '97 Lincoln Mark VIII in Ivory Pearl...that explains the member name. Click on the photo to view the rest of the gallery.
