The speed sensor in the rear is mounted on top of the rear differential. There is only 1 sensor for the rear .. not one for each side.

This sensor goes bad all the time ( I am on my 3rd one). From what I have read and seen this is common to other explorer owners as well. When the rear sensor goe sbad your ABS light will come on and stay on until you replace the defective sensor.

With the 4wd a common problems is the 4x4 control module. Its a 15 minute job to replace it and the part can be had for about $160 os so.

on a new generation explorer its located in behind the glovebox

once you open and fold down the glovebox you will see it right in front of you slightly left of centre

Yup, what he said. It's a little black box, held in by 2 screws..

is there any way to diagnose this problem? i tried to acces the 4X4 area with the scanner and it wouldn't work..maybe because it cannot access this module if it's faulty??

Well, based on what I read on the site, only the 4x4 hi light would only light up when the truck would start (which is what mine was doing). Buttons did absolutely nothing and my AWD quit working as well. I wanted to be 100% certain that mine was the control module so I chucked $80 down the drain (dealer) and had the dealer do a diagnostic check on it. Sure enough, control module.... There's a few other threads about the issue with more symptoms of the control module failing.

truck i've got does absolutely nothing...hit any 4wd buttons you want and nothing happens or lights up..ALSO abs light is on; but i think we figured that out with a speed sensor in the reat axle.

Yeah, none of mine lit up either, only the 4hi did when STARTING the vehicle. Beyond that, nothing worked when I pushed the buttons. Just be sure to disconnect the battery before changing the module.

As for your ABS light, I hear that's another issue with these trucks, the speed sensors go out. My wife's ABS light came on (her truck is the Explorer) and I replaced the sensor 2 years ago (top of rear diff), has been fine ever since. Very easy job, took longer to get the truck in the air than anything...
