Power surge

My '95 F150 300 I6 runs strong and has plenty of power, but the weird thing is that the power does not come on smoothly and evenly like my '84 300 did, but when I floor it from a lower RPM there is a really nice power surge at 2000. Torque seems fine from idle on up, but somehow at 2000 it's like it gets a second wind or something. Anybody have this with their mid-90's and/or EFI 300 I6? It's not really a problem (I keep it well above 2000 if I want to get out quick), just interesting. I think it is caused by the way torque was tuned with the long intake runners when they designed the engine.

Power surge

My 88 EFI has great even torque and power up until about 2500 RPM then it feels like a 4 barrel kicking in until 3500 RPM. The torque is even and I can pull anything in the lower ranges.

Hmmmm...very similar but for the kick-in RPM. I wonder if you have a K&N Filterpack and performance exhaust that would account for the RPM difference. Isn't the 300 a great engine? I just love to hammer it and feel all that raw torque unwinding under me. My wife's Aerostar had the same horsepower, but 100 ft lbs less torque and likely accelerates just as fast (lighter weight), but I loose that power feeling when the acceleration comes from a high pitched wine of the 3.0 bent ("V") six.

The 1988 EFI is stock. I have been thinking about a FIPK and will probably put one on in the next few months. I did change the T18 to a ZF. With the T18 anything over 3000 RPM was cruel. The engine was working way to hard and sounded like it was coming through the firewall. With the ZF I have wound it to 4000 with no problems. I think the difference is gear oil (T18) vs mercon (ZF). The engine is now unbieveably flexible in any RPM range and like I said earlier I now get a 4 barrel type of boost at about 2500 (without the clang and sucking sound of the secondaries). I think the EFI computer may be set differently for the T18? to compensate for the heavier gear oil. Just a guess.

By the way Paul, thanks for all of your posts. While I was researching the tranny swap, I noticed a lot of posts from you that came in handy.

I sure have a lot of tranny posts. If I recall correctly, they probably warned you off from getting a Mazda tranny. Good move getting a ZF. From what I have heard the ZF is excellent. If I ever need a tranny rebuild, I am going for a ZF.
