body part removal

hello everyone! i just registered and i have a few questions about my truck, its a 78 F150 4x4 the body on it is really rusted out and a friend of mine is letting me scrap some parts off of his 77 before he junks it. it may seem like a dumb question but i honestly have no idea how to remove the fenders or the grille shell i unbolted everything i could find on the fender but its still hanging on twords the front like there is a bolt thats being covered by the grille shell, but i cant figure out how to remove the grille shell either i disconnected all of the lights and all the top bolts can anyone tell me how to finish the job?

There is a hard to get at bolt that connects the bottom of the grill to the fenders on either side. The bolt goes throuogh the portion of the fender that is curled under. It's a bugger to get at and frankly, if you are planning on changing the fenders too, you might be better off to swap out the whole front clip. That way you only have the mounting bolts on the rad support and the big ones that connect the inner fenders to the firewall....along with a ground or two. I'm sure there are a few more bolts, but it's a ton easier than pulling individual fenders or grills.

If you lay yourself down with a flashlight, infront of the front tires inside the wheel-wells, you'll have three or four (can't remember) bolts to remove to take the aluminum grill off. The front fenders have the bolt attached to the cab and another near the front underneath. The inner fenders have three or four attached to the core/rad support, another towards the back connecting a rubber strip to the cab.

Hard to get to places are by the door. Get a long extension and open the door and unbolt bolt on top/bottom. Unbolt all bolts under hood on top. Then, depending on your setup, Remove wheel and have truck on jack stands. This allows easy access to the front bolts. Ihad a huge lift and didn't have to. Good Luck.

Welcome to the site!

Pull your grill inserts if they are nice and pull the turn signals or just unplug them.

Punch the tabs down for the rubber wind deflectors up top. (You'll know what they are if your truck has them)

Pull the bolts connecting the center grill bracket top and bottom (the thing the hood latch bolts onto) You can leave it bolted to your radiator support and just remove the bolts to the grill.

Pull the two plates on left and right top sides that connect fenders to grill to radiator support. (You can let the plates sit loose or fish them out but pull ALL the bolts to these two plates.)

There are up to 3 verticle bolts that hold each far side of the grill to the fenders. They are accessed from inside the wheel well. (If you have plastic wheel well liners, pull them) Be carefull not to spin the fender clips on these bolts if you wish to reuse the grill (or ever get it off the truck in one piece!).

Below those 3 bolts on each side is an "L" bracket holding the bottom front of the fender to the grill. It sits directly behind the bumper on each end. Pull the bolt to the fender and just loosen the bolt to the grill till the "L" bracket wiggles around.

The grill is going to start getting loose at this point and will show you anything I have forgotten.

The fender has up to three more verticle bolts holding it to the radiator support. They run in about the same pattern as the 3 for the grill.

The fender to inner fender to radiator plates should be loose from the grill removal. So all that is left if you are loose from the cab is to pull the top bolts running along the fender to inner fender on top and unplug your side marker light. (note. This should be already unplugged to get at the top side grill bolt up in there nicely using a 3/8 drive socket and a 6" extension, it works nice if you unplug the side marker)

Have fun and you may call me if you have trouble and I'll go stand beside a truck and we'll figure it out. 864-593-2942
