How hard will it be to do it and how much would it take in a 55 Ford F-100? Have the original engine and tranny for it? Going to see if it starts this weekend? PRAY w/me!!!!!!
Hey man, welcome to the wonderful world of rebuilding ancient engines that nobody has parts for! Woo Hoo... hehehe I'm rebuilding a 1954 223 for a '53 F100 which was originally equipped with a frozen 215. For me the difficult part is finding all of the parts... it's already been about 6 months, and I'm almost ready to drop it in. If you've got a running engine, or one that's complete, it should take you under a month to rebuild it. I'm confident that it would have taken me about 3 weeks, if the machine shop was on time, and I had all of the 'rare' missing parts.
Good luck and have fun!
Ask me any questions you want, (on 223's) and I'll do my best... long live 223's... lol

Guest What????? Tried it today and got it running but have a serious water leak behind the head somewhere...Still have to trouble shoot it but it cranked over at 11:36am....woohoo...changed the oil, placed new plugs, wires and battery and fired up...also got a bad electronic fuel pump that wont pump to the carb, so have to try the manual one tomorrow...hopefully that is all...only way it turned was putting fuel straight into the carb... :-)
LOL! Good for you!! I'm glad that one of us has a 223 pumpin'. We had to do the same routine with my lil brother's 1960 Chevrolet Apache 10 235 I6. That sure was fun! The exhaust smells real funny on that ol' pickup too, it's not a rich or lean smell, it's just a musty smell coming out of the tail pipe. WIERD!! We kinda gave up on that one, it just sits in our barn... :-)
We tend to stick with Fords...
Good luck!!

Man, I got news for you...I have a serious water leak between the engine and the tranny bolt up area...the water is running straight out the engine when I fill it up...Is there a freeze plug on the top where the engine hooks up with the tranny...There is like a half shape moon space opening where all the water is coming out...Where I am talking about is the top rear of the engine where it hooks up...the engine does fire up...It ran for like 28 secs today..until it ran out of fuel...had to shut down cause I didnt want to lock it up...wooohooo!!!!!! :-) Might have to hook up an electic fuel pump to give it some juice...Also, the engine seems to be already rebuilt...the seals look brand new and there was hardly any sludge in the thing... :-) wooohooo!!!!!!!
I have a complete and running factory remanufactured 223 and 3 speed PU tranny with about 30,000 miles on the clock, that I will part with. It set for several years allowing the valve guide seals to harden, so it smokes a little. Valve guide seals are an easy fix, and at a 150 bucks this motor should go quickly.
