Transfer case

I have a bunch of play in the front driveshaft coming out of the transfer case, does anyone know if you have to pull the transfer case to change a bearing and seal or can it be done without pulling the entire transfer case? 1997 f-350 four door with a 7.3 powerstroke.

You are going to have some play in the front yoke that operates the front end. The reason for this is that these are chain driven. I would just drain the oil out, see if you see any metal in the oil. I believe these t-cases run ATF. 4WD isn't used all the time, so if oil doesn't look to metallic, I would run it and not worry about it.

It started by a little play and a little oil seep but now has turned into allot of play but I do not see any more oil seeping out. Could the transfer case lost all of the oil?

Do you mean side to side or up and down play, or rotational play ??? Up & down or side to side is not normal, but rotational play is normal.

It has play no matter which way you turn the shaft. Side to side up and down. About a 1/4 inch.

Once a t-case chain starts to wear it can go fast, especially in a heavy truck. A chain is pretty easy to change.

Remove the plug on the upper half of the transfer case. The fluid level should be up to the bottom of the plug hole. If not, add more until it starts to run out, then replace the plug. Make sure you are on level ground when doing this.

if you have that much play, pull the shafts, remove the cse nd tke it apart. you have more problems than low oil. when you rebuild it, put 90-140 synthetic gear lube in it. it will last forever.
