My explorer has developed a diesel-like sound while driving, that increases and decreases with the rpm's. This is driving me crazy. You can hear this over the radio. I thought that I possibly had an exaust leak or a heat shield rattling, so I took it in anf found the mounts for the muffler had broken loose. These were fixed and did not solve the problem. I'm also having loud noise which seems to be coming from the tires all of the sudden. This noise fluctuates with the speed also, ending when you roll to a stop. These tires are 6 months old. Help please.
Wheel bearings can make a clicking noise when they go bad, any auto mechanic can check those and make sure they are good. A rattle noise, that sounds like marbles in the engine, is know and pinging. It usually indicates that fuel with too low an octane rating is being used (use 87), a tune up is needed, build up in the combustion chambers is increasing compression, or a host of other things. We really need more infomation from you to point you in the right direction.
The noise from the tires does not seem like a bearing issue, more so like off- road tires would make.
The plugs and wires have been changed, in the last 2 years, probably 20,000 on them. the only thing that has not been changed is the fuel filter. I tried to change it and had no luck removing the old one. When I had the muffler re-attatched, they tried and could not remove the old one. They said I should take it to the dealer. I have 100k on the Explorer and realize that the filter needs changed. I have always used 87 octane but this noise has just recently started.
My 99 had a lot of tire noise after the tires got about 80% worn out. Was bad between 20 and 40 mph and when I got new tires last week and an alignment(toe end was out) and put on new LH upper ball joint the noise went away. 135k miles
bad wheel bearings on the new explorer dont sound like marbles... they sound like a big 4 x 4 with oversize off road tires driving down the street, you will hear a whiinning noise that starts at 10 MPH and gets louder and more "whine" as you speed up--- thats my bet.
That may be the noise from the tires that I am hearing but the diesel-like noise increases and decreases when I accelerate or let off the gas. maybe I have 2 problems.
the "HUB" fix, is replacement of the bearing. it normally comes as a kit, bearing and hub. the hub is not the real problem, the bearing inside has failed.
I'm being told by the garage that my road noise sound is coming from the rear end. Sounds very similar to what I read from the link above. I'm hoping that it just needs new rear bearings.
