oxygen sensor

I have a 96 F-150 w/ 4.9L. Recently, the check engine light came on. After some checking, I think that the O2 sensor needs to be replaced. I have only moderate expertise with repairs. Is this something that can be done without taking it in. Shop wants $25 for the part and $60 for labor. I have all the required tools. Any suggestions would help. Thanks!

At AutoZoo, your looking at $35 for the Bosch O2 sensor. Once you have it, it is really simple to do yourself. Slide under the passenger side right next to the front tire. Pull yourself in about halfway and look at the exhaust pipes. You'll see they come down in duals and connect into one pipe. A bit before they connect is a bung welded to both pipes that has the sensor in it... Just make sure to have a good box end wrench on there and unscrew it.... Really really really simple... When you put the new one back on, just make sure its tight (don't kill it, though) and your all good...

When I did mine, I also unplugged the battery overnight so the computer will reset itself.
