knocking sound

My 82 300 is starting to make a knocking sound all the time now. A friend of mine said it might be a lifter. What do u guys think it is. It used to only do it when it was cold and only giving it a little bit of gas. Thanks for any help

the sound could be coming from a number of things, all of which are bad(meaning engine needs rebuild). it could be a broken piston skirt, worn bearing on crank. loose bearing, and so on. maybee someone else will have a better idea of the prob. but I don't think you will be sure untill you tear into it. if it is knocking then that means that something is loose or broken and the engine shouldn't be driven at all untill it is fixed. if you continue to drive it you could eventually damage it beyound repair

Are you sure the noise is coming from the engine? On my '79 I have a shot steering column bearing that causes a knocking sound sometimes as well as an exhaust pipe that tends to rattle against a frame member. The EFE valve within the exhaust can cause a noise as well as your oil filter. You know your truck better than me - you'll need to listen closely and try to figure out where the noise is coming from.

I am pretty sure it is coming from the engine but wouldnt swear to it. How would it cost to rebuild the engine. That is for parts and the labor for someone to do it because i dont have the time or know how to do it. thanks

get a mechanics stethescope or a long wooden pole and listen to the engine while it is running by pressing pole or stethescope against engine in different areas. you can isolate the knocking and tell if it is in top end, bottom end ,front, back , or even if it is an accessory like your power steering pump.
I found a bad fuel pump this way once.
