I kinda agree with aklim, the test used totally untreated fuel. If at the pump fuel was used the numbers would have been lower making the marginal additives much better, maybe?
Wouldn't the test have been more fair if each product was tested against each brand named fuel?
I ad Mystery oil to my fuel, '01 F250 7.3L diesel, every other tankful. It states on the bottle that Mystery oil is an additive to ensure injector nozzle cleanliness and will stabilize fuel over the long run and does not qualify for ULSD content. I ad 4 oz. per 10 gallons of fuel. Is this enuf lubrication to make up for the loss of such in the USLD?
I think I would not use the Marvel Mystery Oil anymore. Seems it does more harm than good. From the study:
"17) Marvel Mystery Oil
Gas, Oil and Diesel fuel additive (NOT ULSD compliant, may damage 2007 and newer systems) HFRR 678, 42 microns worsethan baseline fuel."
As I have said before, the problem with the article is that the manufacturers would like to see 460 wear while the fuel guys, and almost everybody agrees 520 is adequate. IMO, from a manufacturing standpoint I too would like to see a lower number. Why? Because if this lower number can push the truck another 1000 miles or so, that brings it closer to the end of the warranty. One truck might not be much but on a manufacturing scale, it is a huge savings for the warranty department. On a single driver scale, 1000 miles is meaningless.
I wish somebody would do some proper research and show us how many percent more wear 520 has from 460 and what gives the curve for lubricity vs wear is. If we can see that curve, we can better calculate what a additive is worth. For instance, if using that additive costs $500 but saves you $3000, it is worth it. But if it costs you $500 and saves you $300, is it really good? IMO, more lubricity is better but UP TO A POINT. Question is what that point is? I have yet to see an article that addresses it. Has anybody?
i would think it is a general rule that schaeffers is better then DK, problem is, i can't buy that anywhere near me. Where can i buy stanadyne and is it thouhgt that it is better than DK? i add 1 pint of DK to every fill up in mine and my wifes. what say you all?
Back around the 1960s I was working my way thru college servicing yachts down in Newport Harbor, Ca. In addition to fuel and beer (very important) and some other stuff (ice, bait), we also carried little cans of some type of fuel enhancer products made by Bardahl (I think). I asked the rep one day if this stuff really worked. His answer, 'well it can't hurt as it's just mineral oil with some perfume added to it', was surprising to say the least. He then took a can off the shelf, opened it and drank it with no ill effect. Well, if memory serves, he did have a beer chaser with it.What can I say ?!

Maybe he was constipated. That would certainly do the trick...
