It's the cold air intake version (FIPK kit) that I have on it...........
Jeff
You will be Ok better off with the FIPK. TJ was refering to a K&N with the stock air box. The stock box will let dirt past the filter no matter what filter you use.
FWIW: There have been a lot of dusted turbos with any oiled, gauze filters (K&N) on the site. They have larger pores...the reason they flow more air than their paper counter parts. That was the first thing I learned on this site, I found a lot of dirt in the intake pipe.....after the filter with a K&N & a stock air box. Both were thrown in the trash. My .02
Even the FIPK has the inherant problem of allowing dust in. The drop in's are the biggest problem but even the cone filter many have found dust in their intake using them. Also the 6637 isn't designed to be a cold air intake. Its simply an open element and mcuh larger than the stock filter and cheaper than similiar filters like the AFE, K+N. Turbo Diesel's use much more air than any gasser. K+N's seem to do fine in a gasser though I still don't like them since I can look thru them and see gapping areas of straight sun light.
I would encourage you to take off the K+N and run a clean finger inside your intake tube. If you find dust then you have a problem. if its clean carry on and keep checking every now and then.

I'll check it out, thanks!.............if I do find dust, can't I just switch to a better cone / open air filter using my K&N intake tube etc.?

yes you should be able to use the 6637 on your tube as long as the tube is 4". you might have to trim the tube. Here is a pic of my copy of a tymar intake which uses the 6637 filter. The true tymar will run you about $150
The stock DP looks like it got ran over. its flat and a piece of crap. after market DP will be round.
Checked my DP, it's round and measures 3" so I guess it's not stock
It runs to another 3" tube that then connects to a 3.5" inlet/outlet stubby muffler or cat?? then the outlet of that is connected to a 4" tube that goes to a round muffler and is 4" out the rest.................
I went to pull my K&N filter to see if there was dust in the intake tube and the damn filter had actually come disconnected from the intake tube! So basically, I have been running at least a month with no filter! :shaking: Obviously because of this there is definitely dust in the tube. I'm going to clean the tube out, clean and re-oil the filter and reinstall it and run it a little to see if I then still am getting dust in the intake tube...............
I'm going to do an oil change on this thing since I don't know when the last time one was done..........I've heard good things about Delo 400 and baldwin filters so think I'm going to go that route.....what else should I do right now for maintanence stuff? Fuel filter?.....?? This is my first time doing any maintanence stuff since I've owned it (bought it with 97K miles on it and it now has 101K)
fuel filter is a good idea if you don't know when the last time it was change and get some test strips from napa to see if you got the diesel coolant additive in your truck or just drain what antifreeze you do have and replace it and get the coolant additive
My boss has a 2003 Powerstroke and he opened the hood one day to find the K&N filter lying in the cold air box.
That pushed me to install the 6637 filter which was quite easy. Just for fun I made a box out of some sheet metal and left the plastic scoop to funnel air to the filter. I think the filter is pulling mostly cool air from the plastic scoop. I will try to post some pictures as soon as I can get my camera downloaded.
