Hey guys,
I got an old 16' airboat with a blown engine. I was wondering what you guys thought about putting a carbed 300 on my boat? I've always thought a 300 powered airboat would be awesome. How long can a stock 300 maintain around 4000 rpms?

I'm no pro, but I think you may want to go with an engine that has a shorter stroke length. A lighter engine would probably also be a good idea like a 3.8L v6. ...my two cents. Not that the 300-6 wouldn't work.
4000 shouldn't be a problem for a 300, other than the fact that the stock cam makes it fall on it's face @ 3600... Mine has seen 7000 on a stock bottom end... Maybe run a tranny with a mild O/D..... Or get a mild cam, and run it, just don't forget an intake scoop :-)

Pitt Electric used to sell the 300 I6 for generators. I seem to recall their specs listed the maximum sustained RPM or power output RPM as around 3500. I copied the data and will look it up tonight and let you know if I find out anything. Actually, the engine would run most efficiently at the torque peak of 2000 rpm at WOT, though you may have to up the RPMS if a few more ponies are needed. Perhaps you should run it at the horsepower peak RPM of 3400. (If the engine is really old, these peaks may be different.)
What about using a 1.5 to 1 adapter backwards like a regular boat would use..... Then you'd be turning 2000rpm with the same prop speed. The only problem would be idling.
Set it up with a clutch, and, there wouldn't be any problems idling, just disengage it...
