i just bought a 92 explorer, it has the push botton 4 wheel drive that does not work, it may just be a fuse out. Anyways what are my options for swaping to a manual shift? good idea? bad idea? would i have to change the hubs?
Could be the 4x4 control module. It's located in the rear driver's side quarter panel where the jack is. It's a black box and you will see a white reset button. Press that and try again.
Here's a link that you will find helpful with other stuff.
The first link given by backin72 should provide you with the fix. I've been through this "rebuild" on the shift motor on a 94 and a 92. The rubber stop mentioned in the repair was rotted away, and the contacts shown in the picture needed cleaning since there was some corrosion there. You may have other issues with the controller, but given the explorers age and the common problem it's been, I'd follow the steps there. It'll take at least 3 or 4 hours to accomplish. Second time around you can cut that time in half.
