It looks like the emblem of a group of ex-military that worked at nike missile silo's The silos were a dime a dozen in the 1950's, there are at least three of them within 10 miles of me.
My Navy Squadron had an ugly bird as its mascot also..The Condors, we had the ugly head, and the talons of the bird were grasping a russian submarine.
I would say this bird should be called Gus the Goose.

I grew up within 5 miles of a site (above Sylmar, CA) never knowing it was there until long after it was dismantled. Being close to JPL, Lockheed, Rocketdyne and the Santa Susana Test Site made it necessary.
