I have an early 99 CC 4x4 and have play in the steering box. I have replaces the ball joints, tie rod ends and the track bar is tight. A new steering stablizer and tighening the backlash in the box helped...but is not as good as it should be. It's stock suspension with only 93k on it!
Have you had a reputable front-end shop adjust the slack out of the steering box? I know many will suggest you try it yourself, but I personally would just get it done by a front-end guy that isn't employed by the Stealer. Unless he's doing it on the side for cash/free.
The f-650 box will not fit without a ton of work. They use the big sheppard style boxes. The boxes are about 95 pounds and use a 1 1/4'' splined slip yoke. The f-650 box also sits in front of the axle and uses a push/pull bar for the steering. The pitman arm moves back and forth not side to side. This is because the pitman arm is mounted on the side of the box.
I also have slop in my steering and have had it for a while, and have changed just about every front end part once or twice, and have adjusted the box (made a little aprovement, but that was 50-80K ago). It's pretty bad now, I have just been living with it. Something else aways seems to come up that needs fixing... like ball joints etc. My guess if your front end is tight, it's your steering gear.

I replaced my ball joints about 1-1/2yrs ago, then the tie rod which was bad. This made it feel a little better. But like I said earlier, when I replaced the st. box that made all the difference in the world, like new again. I donn't think the st. pump will make play in the steering but I,ve been wrong before.
