Engine temp sensor?

OK I have been told from a few of yall to change my engine temp sensor to cure my problem with my truck running rich. I feal like an idiot but I cant find where its at. I have been told that its on the t-stat but my stat dont have any sensors or anywhere for one to go. The only thing I can figure is that there is what looks like a sensor (or at least was at one time) above the t-stat on a plug looking pipe. I asked my buddy to look at it sence he was the one who rebuilt the engine and he said that there was nothing hooked up to it before he pulled the motor and could not find anything that would plug into it. I looked it over for a good 30 mins. with him and could not find anything myself. Could someone please post a picture if possable or explain a little in detail here. Thanks in advance.

On some 5.4L models, FORD uses the HCT (head coolant temperature sensor); not the typical ECT (engine coolant temperature sensor).

I can not figure out how to attach the picture.

What motor you have again? On the small V8s it's in the lower intake just behind the thermostat. If you have a connector hanging there and no sensor you cetainly found a problem.

I looked at my 93' F150 (5.0L), and the ECT is located behind the thermostat cover, towards the front of the engine block valley. The connector wires run from the back of the valley to the front, under the intake manifold..

Thanks subford. I have that plug but there isnt anything pluged into it, its broken off like somone used it for a plug instead of a sensor. I will have to look closer tomorow.

Thanks for the help yall. I found the plug yesterday afternoon, It was wedged under the distributer and manifold where you couldnt see it. I pluged it in and the check engine light went off and it quit smoking. Now I just have to reset the timing from where I pulled the distributer out and I will be in buisness. thanks again.

disconnect the battery so th computer can reset itself, 15 minutes should do it.

than go for a ride and let the computer relearn.

then i would recheck the timing.
