Just wondering what after market parts will improve mpg. I really don't care about horsepower it's a work truck and it pulls a trailer or is loaded 5-6 times a week. I read about people getting 18-20 mpg, I'm getting around 9-12 mpg. The truck is 05 f-350 6.0L 4x4 regular cab with a dump insert and is pulling a trailer with equip which is about 2-3 tons. I change the oil every 3k and fuel filters about every 13-16k. I just filled up and it was about 33 gals and I got 345 miles, I though that the mpg would go up over time but the truck has about 32k and it seems like it's not getting better. My neighbor has a 10 year old cummins and he is getting about 18-20mpg pulling a 30+ ft camper. I really love my truck but I would really like to get better mpg without doing damage to the engine with the tuners that say they will add 150hp.
I don't think that the mpg's you are describing is bad at all considering the weight you are pulling ! Your friend is not using his cummins the same way you are and his mpg's are reflecting it. What rear is in your truck? That also has a great deal of influence on your mpg's.
The rears are 3.73 and it's a single wheel f-350. I do alot of stop and go driving because I'm a landscaper, winter it seems like the mileage drops, summer I usually get about 410-425 miles before I have to fill up which isn't bad. I was thinking of getting a 4" turbo back exhaust and maybe using diesel kleen additive, I don't really want to get a chip for another year or two until the warranty is up. The truck is loaded about 1-2 times a week in the busy season with about 2000-3000lbs in the bed and always has about 1000 lbs because of the dump insert.
little stuff i tried was, aftermarket air intake, 4" exhaust, assuring the hubs aren't locked(only when needed), syntheic oil in the front end, trans, transfer case, rear end and the biggest help in starting, longer intervals, and just peace of mind is 5w-40 shell rotella motor oil. one other thing huge help less idle time in stop and go traffic catch the lights drive way ahead of self and keep your egt's down(providing you have indication). you will see a honest mile to mile and half increase and the thing will run like a vette
