Oil Sensor?

Hello,
My oil gauge on my 95 F-150 4.9 L 300/6 is stuck on high!
I replaced the oil sensor going into the block and it worked for a second and then stopped working again. Sometimes the gauge will even fluctuate from low to high??? Any ideas of what I should do next?? Thanks, Larry

Oil Sensor?

There is a post concerning this exact topic that I started. Check back a few months. I was told to replace the filter. Did it, no fix. Then just goofing around I removed the plug that fits over the sensor nipple. I sprayed some wd-40 on it and put the plug back on and it fixed it. I didn't ask any questions.

An interesting point to note, though, is that your guage is most likely an idiot light in guage form. Going from low to high really isn't a designation of pressure, but more, "it's high, but I can't tell how high, because I'm a glorified idiot light."

Did you just recently change your oil? Because my problem started right after changing the oil. But I think I determined that it was mere coincidence.

There is also a post on how to make a real pressure guage if you want to do so.

Thanks, for the tip! I will try removing the cover off the tip, couldn't hurt at this point. I love my Ford truck and always have been a Ford man but, damn they always have had problems with their gauges-lol

Oil Sensor?

Had a similar problem myself last month. After the WD-40 trick didn't do the job and had blown the sensor out with air, I replaced the sensor. Worked like a charm. Could have been a sludge problem in the port or corrosion inside the sensor, I don't know.

I drove mine with the gauge on high and on low for about three weeks before finally just changing it out.

As for the "dummy" gauge idea, the whole set up on mine acts like a real indication except for the lack of numbers on the gauge. It's the same set up as the temperature sensor/gauge and all other electro-mechanical gauges. The sensor provides an electrical resistance with any oil pressure changes. The resistance provides a voltage drop that is then read on the gauge. As the sensor gets plugged or the contacts get corroded it's going to read funny, and get you worried that the engine is going to blow. People just feel comfortable seeing the numbers.

Yeah, I couldn't tell you which model/year of trucks came with real sensors and which came with dummy guages. You may want to check the other post I mentioned earlier to see if it is mentioned there.

Re the previous post, I think I did remove and inspect my sensor. When I put it back on it still wasn't working properly...then I tried the WD40, in which it worked.

Oil Sensor?

My dad has an 86 F-150. He says using multi viscosity oil causes that problem. Try straight 30 weight.
