you can run the glow plugs for 120 seconds without burning them out?????? are you saying that from the factory the glow plugs don't stay on long enough or the wait to start light goes out but the glow plugs continue glowing?
The gp's are built to take it..
Just turn the key on & watch the volt meter ,,,
When it suddenly pops up a bit ,,,start the truck.....
yes they do sell coolant heaters thru jc whitney but there not really worth it unless you don t plug her in at all they heat and circlate the coolant but they were ment for older cars. try cycling the key three times then start it also check the relay with a test light where a friend turns the key on i had a blown fuse for it and went 2 years thinking it was the glow plugs but they are a pain in the a** to change just like the injectors
Alot of diesels do not have glo plugs. One more time, if its not turning over fast enough it will not get enough oil pressure to the injectors quick enough and it will not start.PERIOD
If it is turning over fast enough you could have bad orings in the injectors and its letting oil bypass the injectors.
I DOUBT VERY SERIOULSY ITS A GLOW PLUG ISSUE. A DIESEL DOES NOT NEED GLO PLUGS

Kind of (loud ) bad advise...If we don't need them , why do we have them...
The only diesels that I have ,that dont't have glow plugs, are the ones I don't have to drive to work....
They are their to put initial heat in the cylinder to help in starting. I have 2 Joh Deere tractors with no glo plugs. I had one of the first dodges with a cummins, no glow plugs. Diesel does not ignite with any kind of spark it ignites from compression and heat. It has to turn over fast
Sorry, I missed the question, why we have them. Hell i'm not sure. Who do some and some dont. The tractors sit for weeks without being fored up and I know they dont have them. But these are alos smaller motors than what is in the truck so they will naturall turn over faster. Is my guess

My WAG would be that we don't drive our equipment , 2-400,000 miles
And starting fluid won't explode stuff without glo plugs....
No sure what the mileage our trucks go has anything to do with it. The glow plugs go off after 2 mins. app. They are only there to help with starting. They do nothing once its running.
As far as the starting fluid, I was told never use it in a diesel. Way to volatile and these engines have something like 16 to 1 compression. You'll blow a head gasket or frive the sleeves into the crank. From what I have heard. But, I see people do it.
