that's also my theory, rule out the small and simpe thins first
even a hose that has no visual defects can still leak a good bit

My '99 7.3 pours black smoke under hard acceleration and high boost. this is normal though right?? just taking off from a dead stop and accelerating to a reasonable speed it doesn't smoke. or even under load.

No turbocharged diesel should "smoke" under hard acceleration. They only smoke(black) if they are over fueled or under boosted (turbocharged) If the turbo is not making enough boost it will smoke unless the engine managment computer (if it exists) detects the loss of boost and does not reduce the fuel flow.

You see smoke on all the You-tube videos because everyone overfuels their engines.

guess that's a pretty good theory as far as theories go,I been around turbo charged diesel engine for 40+ years and guess the people that made them missed it

I put 5 inch stacks and a DP tuner on my 2000 dually just to see the smoke! I suggest one of these... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...196028266&rd=1 Seriously.

Well I would certainly agree that a clogged air filter will do all sorts of strange things to these trucks. Once my stock filter was so plugged that the intake tube would actually colapse under heavy boost , causing my truck to lose tons of power and make a horrible sucking noise. Although I didn't notice any extra smoke at the time I'm sure it was smoking more than normal. Now with the mods I have on the truck now it definatly smokes under hard acceleration atleast until it spools up. Which is as it should be. your going to see some black smoke when the motor is lugging thats just the way it is. Once you build alittle boost it should clean out . bottom line check the simple cheap stuff first air filter is a good place to start.

Never said that they "don't' smoke.....Just that they should not smoke.

So your 40 years is still safe!

WIth a relatively stock engine, you shouldn't get hardly any smoke at full boost. If anything, you should have black smoke while boost is building, then it should go away once the turbo is up to speed

Many Thanks!

Thanks again for the great suggestions you guys. Now I have a list of things to check out! Who knows, I may even get better mileage when this gets fixed.

Thank you for all the great ideas! I'll check this stuff out and let you all know what was causing the excessive black smoke.

any turbo with that much wear would not last another mile. if its smoking with no increse of power, it is just about sure a tip has broke of in injecter and it is pumping raw fuel in one cylinder. if you have access to an electronic thermometer,,you can find the cool exhaust. thats the one that isnt atomising the fuel. aver the yaers i have seen more than a few big trucks with this problem. it will cause faster wear in the efected cylinder. an over fueling problem will give a corisponding increase in power which you dont have. leaking intake boots would give a big loose in power which he dosent have. my 50 yearsw of diesel experience and millions of miles of driving tell me to look at the injecters.
