Fading Oil Pressure

Hears a weird 1
When I start in the morning, the oil pressure is between R & M on my 'Normal" gauge. Bout 30 minutes of driving it dips to the N & O. What's up with that? It will stay to the low side for the rest of the day
'84 F150, IL6, 2WD

Thanks for input
Walter

Fading Oil Pressure

what weight oil are you using 5w-30?? I preffer 10w-30
could be that the oil pressure when the engine is cold because cold oil is thicker than warm oil. then as it heats up the oil becomes thinner and therefore flows easier, thus creating lower pressure.

hook up a mechanical gauge if you don't have one now. the ford units are known for inaccurate readings.

My '87 does the same thing. I added a mechanical gauge and put it in the right side "pocket" next to the change and book holder on the dash.

38 when cold at idle and 2000rpm. Drive to work (16 miles) get no more than 20(2000). Idle is about 7-9 (700rpm). Using straight 30W. 10W-30 show 35 when cold and 16 when hot. Idle is 2-4#. This is with a Motorcraft FL-1A filter.

Bearing are worn. new crank-kit being ordered end of month. Along with new cam (stock) and bearings (restoring to stock original piece by piece...at the rate this is going I'll be in my grave 10 years before it's done!).

Should be able to send to shop for cam bearings WITHOUT removing pistons, head, etc. I know I'll have to remove lifters, pushrods, rocker arms. Swap cranks and put back in truck.

Your probably due for at least a new set of bearings, and a crank regrind. When ya do this the cam bearings should be done at same time. If I remember correctly the oil goes from the pump, to the filter, then to cam and crank bearings with a gallery for the upper end (lifters/rocker arms). If the bearings are worn they will expand when warm (outward) and cause loss of or diminished oil pressure.

Fading Oil Pressure

The main bearings are probably teh problem, however, oil pump wear can do similar things. You can drop the pan, pull the pump, and measure it to see if tha is where you are loosing your pressure, a high volume pump will keep you going for a while if it bearings. Don't short-cut it if you need bearings. Use it as an opertunity to trick out your engine. Roy
