302 bottom end

I have this buddy that has been helping me with my 1963 project and im building a 302 out of a 69 ford torino to put in it. I have a few prolems with this situaiton though, first my buddy is a chevy fan trying to tell me how to build a Ford motor. Second he keeps trying to convince me that the bottom end out of that motor will explode without converting it to forged parts if i build that motor to 400 HP like im planning on. So I wanted to know if ya'll knew what the stock bottom ends are good too horsepower wise.

If you want 400 horse out of a 302, you need at least the big main caps (302s probably have them already) and forged rods with ARP or other fine brand hardware. 7000 rpm max, although you can run it higher if you feel lucky.

You are going to be into the 6000 rpm range for that power anyway, so the engine has to be built to take 7000 at least.

And yea, a Chevy guy used to 4 bolt mains will be quite worried about a 302 bottem end. And if you are shooting for 400 horse, you should be worried about it too.....

And if you say (as many do) "Well, I'm on a budget so I can't afford forged rods or fancy hardware..." well then you should try for 275 horse.

Tell your chevy bud to wise up. That ford bottom end will handle all you can give it, just be sure to have the rod bolts changed to ARP and your good to go.
At the 400 hp level it will last for years. I built 3 302's .030 overs using the roller blocks, (weaker than your 69) with stock cranks and rods with arp bolts and used a roots blower with methanol on them till the block split. They each lasted over a year with zero problems from the stock rods, crank before the block finally split. All were bracket raced and had over 550 hp. I now use a 73 351 engine with a stock crank and eagle H beams. over 600 hp for 5 years, zero bottom problems.

no hi vol pump either

don't let him talk you into one, you don't need it, it puts too much load on the dist. gear in a 302. Stock ford pump will do 60 lbs.
