Hi,new here: Iv'e had my '90 f-150 (4.9 6-cyl) about 4 mos. now. I bought it off a lot that said they didn't know much about it (yeah i know..) . it seems to be good exept i have a few questions if someone could take a few mins. to help me out. I noticed what is a vacuum line that has been plugged with a small bolt (iv'e seen this kind of thing before, i'm sure some of you have too) which looks like it goes to the vac advance which is not hooked up. Can anyone tell me why someone would do this? I should mention that there was no muffler attached when i got it, does this have something to do with it? thanks in advance (no pun intended)
The muffler is completely seperate - nothing to do with the vacuum line. Where does the vacuum line come from? On the older trucks the vacuum advance is the distributer, but I'm willing to be you have fuel injection with electronic ignition? -there would be no v-advance. I don't know the 90's 300's to well.
yeah, sorry i forgot to mentioned, it's fuel injected and what i thought to be an advance (the part that isn't hooked up) sits near the back of the valve cover and above the back of it. theres a fitting on it where nothing is connected and the plugged line is right there, and would reach it. I'm also having trouble with a"service engine" light that comes on at certain times, but only when being driven. I can take my foot off or put it in and that corrects it but it still comes back and now stays on a bit longer than before. again- thanks
Yes!, it is green with a nipple! So, as i read other posts on egr's i assume this was done by someone who simply didn't want it hooked up, but why? I'm not getting great mileage as is but could this have anything to do with why my "sevice engine soon" light keeps coming on for periods? I would leave the egr alone if i was told it didn't matter, but the light coming on is driving me nuts. Anyone else ever experience this?
I have the exact same situation that you describe. My egr valve went bad(engine stumbled at about 45 mph at steady speed) a new one costs $70. so I just unplugged mine. runs just fine can't tell a bit of diff. as for the check light it does cause it to flash from time to time. if it bugs you just take a piece of electric tape and cover it up. mine has been running like this for about 3 yrs.
Yes, this is a problem that I don't know if anyone has yet to find a solution for. I have a 90 model f-150 that when driven at highway steady speeds would feel like it was missing. Felt a little different than a spark plug miss, but not by much. After spending hundreds of dollars on parts with no success--including technicians trying to find problem--discovered that plugging the egr vac line stops problem. Here is a list of parts that I replaced before I gave up (all new):
Like i had said, the egr was disconnected when i bought the truck, then, the light would come on for a sec or so and it WAS at around 45 mph. Now, when i looked in the owners manual it said this might happen but if it goes off then the problem has corrected itself(?), but now it's worse and i seem to have to baby it just to keep it off. tape over the light would be a solution...but that kinda bothers me cause i still know something is wrong.
I had a similiar problem with a 91 F150 300 six. Finally discovered timing was a bit too far advanced. This may or may not be the caes on yours, but it may be worth a check.

early 90s EGR valves on most Ford engines tend to plug up. You can take it off and clean it up, replace it, or do what some do, plug the line and put up with the check engine light. Herman
