Howdy. I've got a 1990 F-150 with a 300ci-6. It has developed a fuel leak around the injector closest to the grill. Is this a fairly easy job to change out the injector? It still runs great but I know that it's not real safe. Can I just change the O-ring or is this sealed unit. Is it OK to just change 1 injector without the rest? I'm willing to give it a try...How much should I expect to pay for the parts for this beast..Thanks..Gary
Were it me, I'd go to [pick out your favorite parts store] and buy a set of o-rings for your injectors, and replace all of them, an upper and a lower for each injector; if one's gone, chances are the rest are close behind.
The injectors "float" in the two o-rings, and to get the fuel rail off the injectors you'll have to pull the upper air manifold, too, which means Uncle Henry will see some more of your money when you buy the gasket which goes between upper and lower manifolds.
You'll need to get an EGR gasket at Auto Parts, too.
Before you do all that...make sure the fuel rail bracket bolt right there by that leaking injector is tight.
Although it would no doubt make life easier, if you just want to replace that one injector you do not have to remove the manifold. I replaced my #1 injector with it still together. just remove the bolt(s) that secure the fuel rail, after it is free, all you have to do is pull the injectors out. Believe me they will be in there tight, you just have to get tough with them and pull(carefull not to bend the fuel rail though)after you have the injectors out of the manifold, just do the same to remove it from the fuel rail. after that just follow the reverse to reinstall them(might want to lube the o-rings to make it easier). This is no tough job just the toughest thing is the limited room that you have to work in(that is if you choose not to remove the intake)
A new injector for my truck cost $32.00
Good luck
I would hesitate to replace one injector. The problem is, you will be betting that the rest are close enough to nominal that you won't burn a valve in another cylinder because one of the other injectors isn't putting enough fuel out, causing another cycinder to burn lean. remember the O2 sensor is looking at the average exhaust, not individual cylinders. You can replace the "O"ring on that one injector, and reinstall it, you can remove all of them and have them all rebuilt (costs $20 each here), but I wouldn't just replace one injector, especially if you have a few miles on that engine. Yes do do something. I got my latest head from a f150 that had an engine compartment fire. (good head too.) Herman
