hi guy's 96 E350 5.8L the proble started yesterday the spedo was jumping all over and it didn't wont to stay in OD pushed the button kicked OD off did fine went to work came out to go home took off shifted fine till she got to therd then she wanted to keep going back into second she would stay in therd if you kept the speed down got it home did some research on here so far we replaced the vss/abs speed sensor but the spedo still jumps and it still shifts in and out of therd i'm going to take a look at the wires in a few this is our work van so I need to get it fixed fast.TIA
Just because you replaced the VSS doesn't mean you addressed the problem. There could be metal in your rear end that is fouling the tone ring that the VSS reads. You could try changing your differential fluid and cleaning off the tone ring and the new VSS.
Yes, it could be the ring in the diff. If that's the case, you likely have something coming apart in the diff that fouled the ring. Did you look at the VSS when it came out? Did it have metal on the end?
If its not the ring then its likely the PSOM (Programmable Speedometer Odometer Module). This mounts on the back of the speedeometer. It takes the output from the speed sensor and sends it to the PCM and the speedometer. The module, as the name implies, is programmed for the particular vehicle. Its programmed for tire size, gear ratio, etc... If it's signal is unstable then the speedo and the PCM doesn't get a stable signal and the speedo jumps around and the transmission hunts.
it was on the diff we drained and cleaned it and refilled it but didn't work so we went to the junk yard and was lucky to find one form the same year but it's a E150 will it work if it's reprogramed.
I think thats were it's headed next after today we drained/cleaned/refilled the diff changed the fluid and filter in the tranny got a number 1020 out of the old PSOM got it in the other PSOM and took the truck out for a drive the spedo reads fine to 5 mph then it goes crazy and stops all together and the O/D light flashes the tranny shifts hard and on O/D but it stoped hunting for gears so we did do somthing
it's a 96 E350 and the psom came from a 96 E150 don't know about 2w or 4w abs have to see about that one its my dads van.
It will work fine. You will have the mileage of the other van however.
You just have to change the tire size if the van had a different tire size then what you have.
ok a little recap here 96 E350 5.8L spedo jumping and tranny hunting for gears no abs or OD light changed vss/abs sensor drained and cleaned the diff replaced and reprogramed the PSOM checked the wires as far as we could will test for power to the sensor tomorrow now it shifts hard and has no OD but doesn't hunt for gears the spedo works to 10 mph then goes crazy then stops working all together and now we have a OD light flashing and a warning buzzer going off this thing is driving us crazy and I have searched till my fingers hurt we have to be missing something.
Remove the RABS II module connector from the anti-lock electronic control unit.
Raise the vehicle so that all the wheels are clear of the ground. If the vehicle is a 4x4, verify the transfer case is in the 4x2 mode.
Operate vehicle by raising the rear wheels. Set speed at 30 MPH. Use an AC voltmeter to measure the voltage between Pin 3 (SPEED SIG, Circuit 519 LG/BK) and Pin 10 (GND, Circuit 523 R/PK).
