I Noticed A Small Puddle Of Fuel In The Valley Of My Engine And Was Wondering What It Could Be. I Called A Local Diesel Repair Garage And He Said It Could Be Several Things. O-rings Fuel Pump , Lines, He Said If Its The Fuel Pump It Would Be 350.00 For The Repair Including The Pump. Does Thid Sound High???
If you have a california truck the turbo needs to come off. 49 states trucks can be done without removing it but it a PITA. $350 doesn't sound too bad, $100 for the pump and 3-4 hours labor @ $60/hour.
I had a puddle on mine when i first got it. pulled the fuel filter off and found one of many fuel lines under it that had a small leak on it. replaced all of the hoses and put the filter back on and its all good now. i think this shop is giving you worst case scenario. hopefully yours turns out to be something simple too.
Pump is about 75 bucks for the Bosch at any advanced auto. Where are you located?? I bet you could get someone here fromthe board that isnt to far from you to do it or hel p you with it. It taqkes about an hour to change if you have a knowledge of what is going on. its not hard at all. I think hes trying to rape you. Even our local shop only charges 65 to put one in. I have done three now. NONE of them cali trucks, thank god, and will never do a cali truck either. And no the turbo doesnt have to come off. Thats the idiot way for a shop to charge you a bundle
Did mine last weekend. Took most of the day but did not work at it really hard. Total cost was about $80.00 with banjo washers. If you have the tools you can do it. I've been at this site for about 4 months and have been reading everthing that is posted. Thank you site, this is my first diesel.
I was really surprised how loose all the hoses were from the pump to the fuel filter were. All the clamps I could spin around by hand. Also the banjo bolt was loose .. well it did not require a lot of force to break loose. But it did appear the leak was from the fuel pump so I figured to just go for it anyway. You might want to check that out before purchasing a pump.
The pump was not that hard. The fuel filter was a B&*$ to get out of the way. Also re-installing the banjo bolt with new washers was not the nightmare I thought. My sears wrench 1 1/4 inch worked great without heating and bending .. go figure. Be advised the pump does not come with the banjo washers, at least at Checker .. other auto sites as I had to get them at the International Dealer .. Damn I enjoyed the visit as I think I will only go there for the parts. They were really helpfull.
Would I pay $350 for the job. Yep, if I had the money. My ribs are still sore from this job laying on the front of the truck. Some of you young bucks might be able to do it 1 hour but I'm in my mid 50's I don't thing that is realistic.
