I rember there was a guy who did a custom dual set up on his 7.3 excursion, any one have any pics of a similar set up. I am thinking of doing a Single 5" into a Y pipe dual 5"s shooting right out in front of the rear tires any opinions.
If you haven't already done this I'd suggest routing it over the rear axle and out behind the tire. In front of the tire makes them dirty from the exhaust a lot faster. The guy that did my exhaust told me that, as well as a few others. Also I'd go as large as possible in the singe and smaller in the dual. Single 5'' to dual 5'' is an expansion. This will affect the noise, and the step would help high end HP but may hurt low end Torque.
yeah the kits do get expensive. Have you asked any of the exhaust shops in the area? I found the guy who did mine, and he welded the entire thing from the headers back (including an x pipe and dual mufflers, welding all hangers, etc) for 280 and in 2.5 hours.
Yeah that's the nice thing about living in the sticks, if you find a good 'ol boy that's handy with a welder and pipe bender you can get a quality job done for cheap. I did have to supply the mufflers and x-pipe though.
If you're looking for power enhancement, the 5" is not necessary until you cross the 450 hp marker, and several exhaust design shops I've spoken with all agree that sticking with a 4" system (below 450 ponies) will actually give you a slightly higher power improvement as compared to going to a 5-inch system. I know it won't give the same look, but you can always use a couple of 20-inch long 4x6 stainless tips for the appearance issue.
I would suspect that the 5er would make a deeper sound. Like I said, too, the difference in power is only on the top end, and I don't think it's a huge difference at that, either... just wanted to pass the facts along so you could have everything to make your decision with.
Different folks on here have sound clips of their systems, and I bet you could probably find a couple of them for each size. Hopefully they'll see this thread and chime in for you.
Thanks man. I am not using the truck for racing, or much goofing off for that matter. I just want it to sound good and preform, decently. Even when I had sports cars I would use a little bit bigger pipes for sound even though it took a little away from the power, but hey that is what turbos and nitrous is for.
