Front Brakes

my '97 is in need of front brake pads, I have 152,000 miles on the original. I am looking for pads that will last as long but mostly i don't want that nasty black dust on my wheels.
is it worth buying from the dealer?
are the pads from the dealer the same as the original?
Can I still get them from the dealer?

I wouldn't go to the dealer unless it was my only option. I bet you can still get the pads from them, but I bet the will leave the brake dust all over you rims. If you dont want the brake dust you are going to have to go after market and depending on the dealer it might even be cheaper.

if you don't want brake dust ceramic pads are about the only way to go. I have Napa's Ceramix on the front of my truck and they seem to be doing well.

what kind of life can I expect out of them?

ceramic rotors are normally more squeaky than your everyday rotor...

tirerack.com has some good deals and good descriptions of the pads. As well as the low dust ones.

They have some on sale for $15 I'm about to try. I don't mind noise and dust, as long as they work well. Ever notice that taxi cabs, race cars and police cars squeeeek when they stop? They run the heavy duty pads.

any idea which newer ford pads fit? I don't care about price if I can get another 150,000 miles and no black dust on expensive wheels.

i went to ford and bought new rotors and pads. they guy at the desk asked me if i wanted the cheaper ones. i asked him the difference and he said that the cheaper ones were made for my truck and are the direct OEM replacement. he said though that a lot of folks ask for the more expensive ones b/c they last longer and are quieter, longer. he said they are the pads that superduty's use (they are powder coated blue).

so far they have been awesome! not one squeak or problem and its been about 6 months or so

152,000 miles on front pads? anyone else ever get that kind of life out of front pads?

no dust=ceramic like tim said. you can run ceramic on the original rotors. i dont know what affect aftermarket rotors would have on the dust situation--better or worse.

152,000 miles can't be with towing? I would pay double the regular price for those pads.
