351 Ho

What makes a 351W HO? Is just a factory 4 barrel or what?
I know these engines were used in pickups, but that is about all.
I bought a wrecked 86 4wd that is supposed to have one in it. The current engine was advertised as a crate engine and has about 49,000 miles on it from the installed odometer reading scratched in the core support.

The truck was wrecked, and the transfer case busted badly. I have fired the engine but never driven the truck. I haven't done that in over a year.

I need to get busy and do something.

thanks

John

The 351 HO got a 4bbl carb and a pretty good RV cam, more lift on the exhaust than the 5.0HO but less duration on both sides. You may or may not have that cam in the rebuild, only way to know is measure it.

Yeah, It's starting to bug me a little, it my not be a HO crate engine, it could not even be a Ford built engine. It could be one of those reman mill engines bored 60 over.

Well it's parked under a barn shed, I guess it is not wearing out, just taking up space.

What's a motor and 4wd C6 worth anyways? It can be cranked up. It is in a wrecked Lariat with power windows, AC the whole bit.

Maybe it's Don Imus' old truck - a nappy-headed HO?

Sorry, couldn't resist

Be careful baron, we don't all want to get expelled like he was.

Is a HO W any more desirable than any other 351 W?

It probably was as a factory option, but if you're going to rebuild it and add aftermarket cam, carb, manifold, etc. it doesn't matter since you'll be replacing the parts that made the HO an HO anyway.

I hope with less than 50,000 on it, it doesn't need rebuilding. I might sell it, I need to do something besides letting it continue to collect dust.

We have a 351 HO in our Four winns Liberator. Has a nice holley 4 bbl, and a pretty good cam. Really loud with the water headers and straight 4 inch exhaust. I just wonder how much Hp its making?

The 351 HO is built using a roller block. In other words it uses roller lifters on the cam instead of the usual lifters.

That is incorrect. Those 80's model 351HO engines had a 4180 series 600cfm Holley 4bbl carb, 4bbl intake and a marine flat tappet hydraulic camshaft. Rated around 200hp and ran pretty good. The hyd roller in the 351W didn't appear until the mid 90's.

ok i have the HO 351 in my 85 F250 and it runs very smooth and strong and nice and has a 1406 edelbrock on it

i have decided i am going to haul the truck to the shredder since it doesnt seem that the c-6 trans acts correctly, it has no engine torque braking effect while driving and letting off the gas pedal, and it wouldnt pull the car trailer loaded down very well at all(8,000lbs total) it wasnt putting out the torque from the trans to the driveline..

so off to the shredder it is going.. along with the poor 18 horse hydrostatic automatic trans riding mower in the back haha i dont have time to fix the little things it needs, either even though it runs like new and has 300 dollars worth of new pullies and blade work on it

but i am unsure if this HO 351 is worth pulling and saving

i have no use for such an engine
but i hate to go through all the trouble if no one else might want such an engine either, but then i also hate to waste something perfectly good like this

what about power steering and a/c stuff ?

power steering box ?

8 lug brake parts ?

anything ?
or is this stuff too common/undesirable to pull?

i dont know what i should do and i plan on taking the truck in on about monday or so

i need opinions on anything that i should pull and stash that may be useful either now or in the future when any parts on this particular truck will be less common than they are right now

truck is still complete and drives right now,

how much does this engine weigh fully dressed? 400 ?

thanks for anything!

don't shred it

might as well sell it if it runs, someone will give you a few bucks for the old truck!

I'd keep the engine if it were me but I'd also keep the truck. If I was close enough I'd offer to take if off your hands.

fast68 where you at in IL? I'm just outside of Davenport IA, I'd be glad to take the old truck off your hands if you're close enough, and the price is right.

pretty far away i am in the direct center of the state over here on i-55 exit 123 above springfield 35 miles

the truck drives good its just that i was told the trans is not supposed to return to idle when driving/coasting in gear

so i cant have that

i cant rebuild a trans or find a good used one

stuff like that doesnt exist over here

you cant evne find a sbc engine here

let alone anything else
