Yes that sound is normal, as the water heats up over time the sound will diminish slowly. Each time you plug it in and the water is cold it will start over with the same noise.
An electric water heater makes the same sound when it kicks in, as it works the same way.

I plugged mine in once last winter and it helped with noisy lifters that morning. Next day I tried and it was dead lol.. I guess the previous owner hadn't used it in a long time seeing as my truck is more of a summer vehicle. Ah well, no more cold winter my sweet thang. She's in the garage.
You could get a factory block heater for a 351?! My brother's diesel has one, but I thought it was only a diesel thing... Was this strictly an option or do I have a plug dangling somewhere that I never saw before?!
My 95 Bronco 351 has a factory block heater. I bought it as a dealer owned vehicle in the Seattle area (not too cold there).
Look for an electrical cord under the passengers side hood. The plug end is bundled somewhere under the hood if it has never been used.
I use a tank heater on my 93.
Many people recommend this as a better device. It actually percolates warm water up from the lowest area of the block and circulates it to the heater core.
I use a timer to activate heater several hours before I need the vehicle, but at only $.03/KW, I don't now why I bothered with the timer. (equates to four and a half cents per hour)
