If the shifter is sloppy, there is a plastic bushing in the steering column that wears out and will need to be replaced. Eventually, it will not shift. Another thing is the clutch rod that goes from the clutch pedal through the floor. The ends on the clutch rod wear out and when the end breaks off, you're stuck in that gear. Had that happen at a busy intersection w/ my '83 F-100 three on the tree. I just mentioned the two main things that happened with my truck. Check all the stuff that Holmesuser mentioned. Good luck.
so what do i have to fix to stop my shifter from hanging up, and does any body know where i can get a pdf FSM for this truck?
I assume from your profile that you have a 1980 F100, and it's a 3 speed manual (you didn't say).
Binding in gear = Worn, broken or missing plastic snap on bushings in the two steering column selector levers, at the bottom of the steering column under the hood. This is where the two shift rods from the transmission attach.
2-E0SZ-7341-B .. Bushing / Still available from Ford ~ List price $3.07 each.
Fit: 1980/87 F100/350.
No bushings (plastic or otherwise) are used on the two transmission levers on the transmission.
