hey guys i have a 83 f250 with a 7.5 big block. i have spark and if i can get the truck to run on starting fluid while someone cranks it doesnt that mean that i need a fuel pump? also if it had a mechanical pump wouldnt it be on the drivers side of the block ? didnt most these trucks just have the electric pump in the tank ? sorry for the question but i cant think right now..... thanks for your help in advance and sorry for the long post
A lot of the 460 trucks did have electric pumps in the tanks. You could jumper a hot wire to the pump and see if it runs, or check for voltage. There are several things with the wiring that could be the problem too, including a crash safety switch that may need to be reset. I think it's over at the passenger kick panel, but that's a guess and I hope someone who knows where it is on your truck will write in.
thanks franklin2 yea hopefully someone will chime in. i had the truck running yesterday but i got it going by using starting fluid so i dunno. it needs a tune up so ill probably do that tomorrow morning and ill try checking more stuff out depending on the weather
I find that it takes at least a gallon or two to start, you might have carb issues and possibly low manifold vacuum. You can check manifold vac by hooking a vac gauge up to the vac tee on the back of the engine. Also, you can check fuel pump pressure by hooking a pressure gauge (my vac gauge reads both) to the fuel line, and you should have about 5psi.
