I cannot get my four wheel drive to kick in for some reason on my 96 F-150. When i bought the truck last summer, the transfer shifter was all locked up do to the truck sitting idle for a long time. I took it all apart and greased and it and now it works good, at least showing on dash that its in 4x4 and i can hear and feel the high and low range difference but i still cant get the front wheels to catch. The front axle shafts are spinning when in but not engaging the wheels. Do you think i got a broken part in between there or the hub area needs cleaned and greased? I dont know a whole lot about 4x4 componets and still learning but dont want to cause any more damage if i can know the problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
if they are autolocking that is your problem. They are not locking and engaging the front wheels. You might try taking them apart and cleaning the up but your best bet might be to swap them out for some warn manual hub locks. They can easily be found in the junkyard, I got mine there, both sides for $2.
I have a Ford 350 Super Duty and the automatic hubs are not working. I took it to the dealer and they claim they haven't heard of this??? I have done some experimenting on my own changing the vaccuum shift on the fly selinoid and it didni't do anything. The four wheel drive works fine from the dash switch if I leave the hubs locked in manually, but I turn the four wheel on and off at intersections for better traction pulling a cargo trailer in the winter and I don't want to have to jump in and out to get four wheel. I don't like to drive on dry payment either with the hubs locked in for sake of convienence. I would like to fix the problem but don't know where to turn now. I hope someone can help me with this with advice or shed some light on how to fix it. Thanks.
