Well boys im back with more questions. I went to the local auto store looking to get a new thermostat. I figured i might as well replace it seeing how the last owner treated the truck. The guy then asked if I had one thermostat or two. This is my first deisel so im not as knowledgeable as you gents. So how many does an 87 6.9L have? and what temp I need? My truck runs at 170 deg. or so right now. I heard that diesels run better around 200 deg. Is that true?
It has one thermostat and you buy it at the International dealer or the Ford dealer ONLY! This is a dealer specific item. There are some aftermarlet thermostats available that are supposed to work, but they do not fit properly and you can pretty well count on problems later.
Luckily the IH dealer here doesn't gouge too bad on price on those things, but the ford dealers are sky high on their price for the thing.
Really? so the "generic" ones from autozone/ checker/ napa wont work? How are they able to sell them? Is the thermostat located within the upper radiator hose. On the passenger side of the truck. THe one thats all tucked in there nicely?
remove the housing that the upper rad hose is attached to. It sits in there. In the housing piece you remove, there is a little hole just off the main hole that has a small ball bearing check valve in it. Make sure the ball is still there and the hole not obstructed. This helps bleed the system.
The factory thermostats have a special designed rubber seal on them, the after market ones do not IH had a bullitin out about this way back when. Don't try to cheap out. I gave that a shot when I first got mine ( the old brain thinking , aw, those guys are nuts, the aftermarket one will work ok, they work fine on everything else, dang dealer parts snobs) Bzzzzzzttttt WRONG It had problems, just like everyone said it would, got one at the IH dealer, no more strange temp behaviour.
Heat and friction of air molecules from compression are what make a diesel do what it does. That's what they have no oomph when cold. Yes, 170 is a bit cool. The factory thermostat is around 195 I think. and they will generally run 195-200 up to 220 climbing with a load. Mine runs about 190 ish or so most of the time, but I have a huge custom radiator in the thing and the thermostat doesn't get a chance to stay open for long at a time with that thing.
