When I use to load and unload my boat, I would lock my front hubs and leave it in 2WD, until I started to pull out and then put her in 4WD. Once I get to level ground, I would then again take her out of 4WD (hubs still locked). It did not really matter since there was sand everywhere and you could turn OK if it was still in 4WD.

do not wait till your stuck to put it in 4x4..just cause you turned the **** or pulled the lever..it doesnt mean its in 4x4..the front wheels need to turn a bit before it locks in..i have seen many shafts broke cause people wait till there stuck to put it in 4x4..the back tires spin and then the front tires lock.. it really raises hell with things..

Don't worry about it....I use 4x4 everytime cause the ramp is always wet and there is moss on the ramp. Just keeps from spinning the rear tires. Nothing will be hurt. But what was said before...Once you get straightened up and before you back all the way in for the boat, put it in 4x4...less likely to hear and feel the "clunk" of the front end engaging. then you just pull out til on dry land...and back to 2x4.
