Smile 400 project

I got a 400 block .030 over, rebuilt 400 crank .010 under, silvolite piston, new ring, oil pump, elderbroock performer 400, 600cfm carb elderbroock,x-treme energy 256H ,stock aussie heads. It took me a LOT of time to get all the part.Missing a timing chain and want to rebuilt my aussie head.It took over 8 years to get my parts on a tight budget and still not finish.I wedge that 400 in a 81 mustang then remove for a rebuilt.I never start the 351m in the stangs so i don't know how it's gonna run.I'm a fan about down and dirty and make the replica of that but with a performer manifold, carb and aussie head. How much torque and horsepower should i have.Any suggestion are welcome.my 400 is on a engine stand since yesterday so i'm very happy to finaly put my hand to the wrench.

I need to know the compression height and the dish cc of that Silvolite piston to calculate the compression ratio and the torque and Horsepower.

Dan,

This piston is listed as 7.9:1 with stock heads. CH is 1.63" while dish is listed as 2.944" diameter x 0.115" deep....that's about 12.83cc....I think, may need to check my math.

That's close enough!

I get a flat torque curve with 444, 446,439, 441, 414, 371 ft-lbs torque @ 2000, 2500, 3000, 3500, 4000, and 4500 RPM. The peak HP is 318@4500 RPM.

If you do some porting on the exhaust side, and improve the head flow over stock, the high RPM numbers will come up a little.

This also assumes large tube headers.

what method do you use to determine those numbers?

I use a program called Dyno Sim. It is relatively accurate. The more accurate the input numbers are, the better the output. In many cases, the input numbers are estimates, and the results will be as good as the estimate.

The most important result is the shape of the torque curve, flat or peaked at the low RPM side or peaked at the high RPM side.

Aussie heads flow about the same as US 351C-2V heads, but not quite as good because of the closed chamber. I used 351C-2V flow numbers, so you may not do as good, but with a little exhaust port work, you can do better.

I used 9.11:1 for the Compression Ratio. That should be close to what you have.

down & dirty claim to get 382 hp and 436 torque.I use the same think exept the manifold, aussie head and a different cam.I tought to get better numbers? Where is
my lost of 64 hp ? The torque is close but i tought the aussie head will bring my torque higher.Thank you for the number.

Those numbers published in Hot Rod magazine are always inflated. I don't know anyone who has reproduced them. The same is true with the stroker that the built recently. Horsepower is just torque X RPM. If your torque numbers are close, then you just have to get it to rev higher to make more HP. The way to get it to rev higher is with better head flow. They don't say what porting work was done.

My simulations are with mufflers. The published figures may be with open pipes.

Yes, it is about 9.5:1 with Tim's piston. Also you will have quench. That will help prevent detonation.
