I have not owned a 4x4 since about 1978. Iknow they were terrible for binding and bucking when you turned. I thought they had fixed those problems. My 01 F150 does it. Yesterday was the first time I have used it. Is something worn out or are they still this way? TIA, Tbolt
Sounds like your on dry ground, thats going to happen, but you should avoid it as that's when things start to break. They have limited slip 4 wheel drive systems that don't do this, but as of now it's only been offered on the 2007/2008 Harly trim level for the F-150 line.
Are the tires on the front of the truck and the rear matched....i put a worn out set once on my rear and a new set on the front and it binded really bad... .got to watch out for the different sizes in tires
Yes, they still do this, and will continue to do this. In a turn, the front tires follow a longer arc than the rear tires. This difference needs to be made up somewhere along the line, so the bucking you feel is one of the ends slipping over the ground. Completely normal...
Thanks for all the replys. The tires are all the same size. I am talking severe binding. I was in a mcdonals drive thru and had to make a very sharp turn. I took it out of 4 wheel but I guess it has to move a few feet before it changes over?
I had a rental truck one time, it was an 01 chebby with full time 4 wheel drive. It did not do that. I sure hope chebby is not built better? Does being full time 4 wheel drive make a difference?

with the full time 4wd there is a differential in the transfer case that lets the front to rear split .... but its not as good for off road use... not as solid... you shouldnt be turning on dry pavement really anyways...just put it back into 2wd if theres that much traction
my wife has an Explorer with full time 4 x 4. It works fine, If you turn a sharp corner on the side of the road with 1 tire on the gravel and one on the concrete, you can feel the 4 x 4 kick in and out... works o.k., but not a real truck.... Now my F150 4 x 4 works just as good in 2 wheel drive. It has a LS rear end and that will get you almost anywhere you want to go. That being said, when you put it in 4 x 4 and the front end locks in the truck will climb about anything because you got AT LEAST 3 wheels locked together. It dont turn worth a crap on blacktop when locked in, but sure will pull in a straight line............ Tell your full time Chevy guy thats the difference between a real 4 x 4 truck and a want-a-be.

No...you still only have 2 wheels "locked together" unless you have a full-on locker in the front or rear diff. Yes, LS helps, but it's nearly useless offroad when you get into a bind.

Like burns said...all fulltime 4WD (all wheel drive (AWD)) vehicles have a "differential" of sorts in the transfer case. But, you can lock them into 4WD and it will be just like selecting 4WD in our trucks. When it's unlocked, you can put the front tires on ice and the rear tires on pavement...and the front tires will spin. Turn it around and put the rear on ice, and the rear tires will spin.

I think my LS works amazingly...not saying your wrong because your are exactly right with it not being a locker...but when flexing threw some ditches and one rear wheel in the air...it will still pull me threw it... but yes lockers are the only way to have true locked 4wd
if i stand on the throttle with one wheel on the gravel shoulder and the other on the pavement it will still smoke them both...so maybe im just lucky with a super sercret LS...lol not likley but oh well i cant complain
