i seem to get a small thud noise when I hit small bumps, like something coming loose or wearing away. I had it with my past truck, an Avalanche, and for $19 i changed the End Links with better bushings and stronger meterial (from steel to SS) and it tighted up my steering and suspention, all for 20 minutes work. I this truck (05 Expedition), I could not rent a clue as to what bushings or where the endlinks, if there are any, would be.
I would start with shocks, verify that ALL the bushings are in good shape. Then work around for other issues, end links and such. Depending on mileage your ball joints could be worn out too, take a jack and bring the front end up slowly and watch the ball joints while you jack. As you jack the side of the truck up watch the tire and as it just starts to leave the ground you may see the slight separation from each ball joint that will occur when they are bad. Do each side individually and set them on jack stands, then you can check your end links and steering knuckles. You can either move the suspension (tires) on each side and watch for excessive movement, or have someone in the cab slowly work the steering wheel back and forth. Also check for play by grabbing the tires and work them back and forth with your hands at 12&6 oclock, and 3 & 9 oclock checking for play.
Take a look at your front sway bar bushings. I developed a squeak/clunk when going over bumps around the same mileage. Dealer replaced the bushings on the bar and the noise went away.
i will do that, kind of on the scale of what I thought the problem might be. Do you happen to know if there are any aftermarket (ie more robust, longer lasting) fixes on the market?
