lol wow. i would agree that rtv is going to be a pain. im thinkin ill probably do it on wedsday cause dads not home untill late. it seems pretty strait foreward. im guessing brake cleaner will do a decent job cleaning out the bottom?
Well ya can but no need for all that, scoop the bottom of it all out with a spoon or something, wipe it out with a couple of clean rags and then put the cover back on.
yea, just did mine a couple months ago. would have gone pretty quick if i hadn't taken taken the time to paint it and protect the thing from rusting further.
...never done it before either and felt 10x better after having taken out the stuff that smelled like old diapers
sounds appealing lol. i fill the diff in the fill hole then when it starts comming out o fthe hole that means its good correct. i probably asked this question before but i just want to be positive.this thing has to work after im done lol.

Yes sir. Loosen the bolts on the diff cover (bottom ones more then the tops) to allow the fluid to drain out the bottom of the cover. Remove the cover, clean out any residual fluid, scrape off the old RTV with a blade, apply new RTV to cover as I showed the picture posted before, put diff cover back on, screw down screws as per directions on RTV tube (some say to let it set before torquing to spec while others say to torque right away). Remove the fill plug on the front of the differential with a 3/8" socket drive and fill it until it starts to overflow (should be 2-3 quarts IIRC). Good luck
ya knowhat im just gona do it tommorow. dad is bound to say something negative but i can always get him by saying its my truck,i paid for it with my own money and i want to do what i want to with it.ill post up if i have any problems.hopefully not.nothing too hard.theres not a specific torque spec?
The 8.8 should be 5.5 pints or 2.75 quarts of lube to refill. Probably less depending on how much you are able to drain. If you are adding friction modifier, be sure to add it first while there's still room for it (I think I remember not needing it though from an earlier post).
He said his Royal Purple fluid is LS-ready so he shouldn't need to add any friction modifier. I used Redline synthetic which was LS-ready and got no clicks or chatters from the rear end, no FM needed.
got it changed out before dad got home! got the fluid to where it was right took it down the road and back a few times and all seems good. thanks big time everybody!
The vent is the rubber hose that stems out of the top of the differential and is hung up somewhere near your rear gas tank. This is to allow the rear differential to vent but help prevent it from sucking any contaminates in, by putting it up higher.
oh ok. ill check it tommorow. i had 1 and a half bottles of royal purple and i dont think that was enough. figuring each bottle is a quart theres a quart& a half in it. too low maybe?
