I have a '90 2wd F150 with a 302 mated to an AOD. I am considering a cummins 4bt swap with the goal of increased fuel economy. I have always wanted a stick shift so I was thinking of swaping in whatever tranny was on the engine, probably a t19. I've also heard that drag racers beef up AODs and I thought that would be a lot simpler than converting to a manual. I'm not intending to tow anything, but the tranny has to handle the low end tourqe. Any sugestions?
Converting the AOD would mean a custom adaptor. Those beefed AOD's run well over $2000 and "standard" (AOD to Y block, FE, Chev, etc) adaptors run $650 or better. Beef up rebuild kits are $500 or so.
ive also been looking into this but just cant bring myself to spend the innitial $$$$ to do it but i will throw out some info if you want a stick converting is not difficult ive done it on a few vehicles including 3 f150s and non were that bad just go to the junk yard and get the pedals and clutch master/line from your gen truck cut a hole in the floor for the shifter and bolt everthing in, your probobly going to need a custom drive shaft and trans mount/xmember for your engine swap anyway and your mpg and power will be quite abit better 10-20% with the stick over the aod and it should be cheaper the only way to get a cheap performace auto is to go C4 or C6 or gm th but then your mpg goes down alot more the t19 that alot of them come with should work asuming it has a hydro clutch but t19 is non OD so i was going to get one with the ford trans adapter and run a zf5 that would be better with the OD and is still very strong you could also get one with a gm trans adapter and run a nv4500 but those are a few more $ than a zf but have an external slave which in my opinion may be worth it good luck
Thanks subs1000w, my only reason for sticking with the AOD was that I thought keeping the auto tranny would save a bit of work. But If I'm doing an engine conversion I might as well put in a good tranny. I was also considering a ZF. I would love a six speed, though I heard it was a bit bigger. Has anyone tried fitting a ZF6 in a F150?
a zf6 will not bolt up as it was never offered behind a standerd ford small block type engine aka 300 302 351w
the only 6spds im aware of that "might" work would be the NV5600 or Mercedes built G56 both these are found in dodge rams with the 5.9 cummins and both are extremely strong and shift very smooth my friend has one is his 03 ram and its much smoother than my zf5 its also handleing over 500hp 1000 ft lb of tourque at the rear wheels and is turning 35in tires and he races it and beats on it and tows with it every day the only down side to the trans is there $$$$ but if you buy one chances are youll never have to replace it
as far as fitting one of these it might take a bit of hammering and cutting but nothing major and it would be worth it in my opinion
I would only use the ZF6 if I already had a cummins 4bt, which I thought you could get an adapter for. Is there anything important I should know about the auto to manual swap?
the only other thing i can think of is once the swap is done youll have to jump the nuetral start switch in the auto harness to get the truck started i cant remember what wires to jump you might be able to find out in the search or if you no how to use a mutimeter to find out but thats really it
